New City firefighters were at the scene of an early morning house fire that completely destroyed the home at 6 Woodglen Drive in New City, owned by Joseph Tarulli. The fast moving blaze was reported just before 6 a.m. and little remained of the home by 7 a.m. One Congers firefighter was taken to Nyack Hospital complaining of chest pains.

No injuries to the residents were reported. Firefighters were breaking through the roof to vent pockets of smoke and check for any smoldering areas.

When the New City Fire Department arrived at the home, the Clarkstown Police had already helped evacuate the residents, who had been alerted to the blaze by their smoke detectors. New City firefighters were assisted by units from Nanuet, Congers, West Haverstraw, West Nyack, Valley Cottage and Hillcrest.

An estimated 50 firefighters responded to the call. New City and Spring Hill ambulance corps and Rockland Paramedics also responded to the call.

New City Assistant Fire Chief Jim Avaras said flames were shooting out the windows of the home when he an other firefighters first arrived at Woodglen Drive. He said firefighters tackled the flames with four hand-held hose lines. The New City Fire Department's tower truck poured water onto the house from above.

The New City Fire Inspector is at the site and Clarkstown Police Department detectives have been called in. Woodglen Drive is closed and one lane of North Little Tor Road is also closed.

Smoke could be seen for a mile away from the fire. The fire is believed to have started in the basement of the multi-story home and spread throughout the structure. The residents are currently staying with neighbors.

The photo where you can see the firefighter wearing his pajama pants is awesome! Thank goodness we have these volunteers who leave the comforts of their homes to save the homes and property of others. I am glad the residents are safe and wish them well through this difficult time.

The 6 a.m. call at 6 Woodglen Drive was the second call of the morning for New City firefighters. As this fire was burning, county fire officials had to rush over to Monsey, where another building was on fire on Maple Avenue.

How upsetting - This is the 4th local fire I've seen reported in the Patch today. My heart goes out to these poor families, who need to rebuild their homes and their lives. And, yes, kudos to our great fire fighters! Luckiily, everyone is safe.
I can't help but wonder why so many fires recently? It would be a great idea if the town or fire department could hold a fire safety evening class. I know I would be sure to go!
