Smoke From Warehouse Fire In Orange County Visible from Rockland, Westchester

More than 150 firefighters battling blaze.

Smoke from a huge warehouse fire in Orange County is drifting south, with the effects of the blaze visible from Rockland and Orange Counties.

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Director Gordon Wren Jr. said Stony Point volunteer firefighters are on standby to assist Cornwall firefighters in case they need help with other emergencies. Wren said a large warehouse in a former mill complex has been burning since around 10:30 this morning.

Wren said he could see the smoke from New City, and others reported seeing the smoke from as far south as Valley Cottage.

Published reports say more than 150 firefighters are battling the fire.

A four-alarm fire engulfed the building that is home to Superior Packaging at 2 Mill Street Sunday morning. The building is located in the rear of the Cornwall Industrial Park, along Moodna Creek

The fire was reported around 10:30 am and two and half hours later firefighters from throughout the area are still trying to extinguish the flames shooting out of the roof of the building complex. Ashes floated down throughout the area but the fire did not appear to have touched several other buildings at the same address, including the old Firth Carpet Mill.

A man who asked not to be identified said he was at Superior Packaging this morning to pick up barrels around 10a when he saw flames on the roof of the building. Other workers in that building left as well, he said.

The building had been flooded by Tropical Storm Irene in August, leaving mounds of soaked paper goods throughout the site. The large warehouse structure is 300,000 square feet and there are at least six other businesses that operate from the structure in addition to Superior Packaging.

I saw the huge cloud of black smoke over Peekskill Bay and knew some big fire was burning up river. Billy Diamond's studio was located in the building. Was the puppet guy who used to be in the masonic lodge next to the Paramount. I think that burned up when he was there too.
