Pearl River Lion Mentors Toward Girl Scout Gold Award

Pearl River Lion Janet Fisher is  serving as a mentor for  Bridget Owens, Troop 40330, Pearl River, on  her  Gold Award Project  -- a Square Foot Garden, which will be used to support area food pantries.

This is Ms. Owens' account:

For my Girl Scout Gold Award, I built a community vegetable garden using the square

foot garden method. The vegetables grown in this garden will be donated to local soup kitchens.

I built this garden this past summer in Pearl River, New York with the help of Janet Fisher, a

Lions club member along with the help of many volunteers from my school, friends and Boy

Scouts. I raised funds for the project by holding a garage sale and a bake sale. In addition, I

received donations from multiple people and companies who supplied the wood and screws

needed. I chose this project because I had recently gone to a soup kitchen to aid in serving and

preparing the food. After going to this soup kitchen, I became aware of some of the needs of the

soup kitchen as well as the needs of the people I was serving. By constructing this garden, I was

able to help those less fortunate than me. I am able to take part in the good health of many people

that are suffering in my community.
