Bringing Africa to Pearl River Library

Children learned about African and Native American drumming in the Community Room at the Pearl River Library as part of the "Around the World" theme for the library's summer reading program.

Children were delighted to create their own African drums from coffee and oatmeal cans as part of the "Around the World" summer reading program at the Pearl River Library.

Eileen Stelljes taught the children about different symbols and their meanings and teen program volunteers helped the children cut out and glue their favorite to their new drums.

The kids then sat around and had a tribal drum circle, following a listen and response period where some of the children volunteered to create their own rhythms.

Video: Children learned about the importance of drums, decorated their drums, and then followed Stelljes in a drum circle.
