Check Out Orangetown Movie Night, Chance Cosgrove Golf Outing

A Patch guide to upcoming kid-friendly events and places to go with your family.

Orangetown Presents “Movie Night in the Park”
Where/When:
Veteran’s Memorial Park in Orangeburg; Friday, August 5. Event begins at 6 p.m.
Why Go: The Uncle Brothers will perform in concert at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Magic Show at 8:00 p.m. and a free screening of “Kung Fu Panda” at 8:45 p.m. There will be cartoon characters, clowns and family entertainment for all. Adults and children of all ages are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy this fun event sponsored by the Orangetown Parks and Recreation Department. Pricing: Free admission and free popcorn. Open to all Orangetown residents.

Second Annual Chance Cosgrove Golf Outing
When/Where:
Rockland Country Club at 380 Route 9W in Sparkill; Monday, August 8. Day begins with registration at 10:30 a.m. and Tee-off at 12:30 p.m.
Details: There is more than golf going on, so the family can participate in this event, too. Rockland Country Club’s Olympic-size pool will be open during the day (all children must be supervised by a parent or guardian). A barbecue lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. While the golfers hit the links, families can soak up the sun and listen to music by the pool. Price is $30 per person. Dinner at the Club for non-players will be $100 per adult and $45 per youth. Kids may order an a la carte dinner for $20. For more information, please email ChanceCosgroveFoundation@gmail.com.
Pricing: The cost for this event is $250 per adult ($175 for kids 12 and under). This price includes entry into all events, 18 holes of golf, a riding cart, lunch, gift package for each player, banquet dinner and various awards. Pajama Stories with Teen Volunteers
Where/When:
The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Wednesday, August 3 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Why Go: Children, ages three to five, can come to the library with their favorite sleepy-time buddy and dressed in their pajamas and listen to bedtime stories read by the library’s teen volunteers.
Pricing: Free. No registration but a valid library card must be shown.

Tween Game Time (Pearl River)
Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Wednesday, August 3 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: Tweens entering grades four through six can meet their friends at the library and play Wii and other games.
Pricing: Free. No registration required.

Story Time for 2s and 3s with Mrs. Gunning
Where/When:
The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Thursday, August 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
Why Go: A summer-themed story will be read and toddlers in attendance will be instructed on how to make an easy, fun craft.  
Pricing: Free. No registration but a valid library card must be shown.

Comedy Juggler Ned Gelfars Performs at Pearl River Library
Where/When:
Community Room in The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Thursday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Why Go: His fast-paced, funny show includes juggling, unicycling, and fire-eating, plus lots of hilarious, good-natured audience participation. 
Pricing:
Free for participating members of the Reading Club.

Bowling Fundraiser at Pearl River Lanes
When/Where:
Friday, Aug. 5 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 7 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Why Go?: Proceeds from this bowling fundraiser will go to Linda Parvis, a Rockland County resident and mother who is battling cancer. For more information, please email lifeandlove4linda@gmail.com.
Pricing: $30 per person, includes two games, shoe rental, a raffle ticket, a soda and a slice of pizza; $20 if you don’t bowl, plus five raffle tickets, a soda and a slice.

Make Steampunk-Inspired Jewelry
Where/When:
The Meeting Room at the New City Library, 220 N. Main Street in New City; Wednesday, August 3 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Why Go: Using items from the bike shop and the hardware store, teens are invited to learn how to create unique pieces of jewelry inspired by the Steampunk movement.
Pricing: Free. Register by calling 845.634.4997.

New York Renaissance Faire
Where/When:
Sterling Forest in Tuxedo Park, NY; Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, from August 6 through September 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Why Go: The Faire is a rollicking romp through Elizabethan England complete with 16th Century games, rides, arts, crafts, food music and dance.
Pricing: Tickets purchased in advance: Adult: $20 and children (ages 5-12) are $10 each. Tickets purchased at the box office on event day: Adult: $22; Child (ages 5-12) is $11. Children under 5 are admitted for free.

Battle of the Bands
Where/When:
The Pearl River Library, 80 Franklin Avenue in Pearl River; Friday, August 26 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Details: Teens and young adults are invited to battle. Rock and acoustic bands may send demos or samples to Christina Linder at clinder@rcls.org no later than August 12. They can also mail them to her attention at the library or drop their demo off in person. Bands will perform for 30 minutes. First place price to be awarded.
Pricing: Free, but tickets are required for entry. Limited space and availability. Call Ms. Linder at 845.735.4084, ext. 138 for more information.  

Car Wash Fundraiser
Where/When:
Pearl River Hook and Ladder on Central Avenue; Sunday, August 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Details: Come and get your car washed with proceeds going to benefit the family of a single parent of two in our community, who has been diagnosed with cancer.  For more information, email mcsbmcsb@aol.com.
