Explore Harriman State Park, Hear Rockland County Concert Band

This week's Grab and Go Kids Planner is filled with family-friendly events and memory-making experiences.

Harriman State Park
When/Where: Bear Mountain, exit 16 off the NYS Thruway.
Park hours vary by area.
Why Go: With 200 miles of hiking trails, three beaches, two public camping areas, numerous lakes, reservoirs and streams, plus scores of scenic roads, picturesque vistas and vantage points, Harriman Park is the ideal place for you and your family to commune with nature. Pricing: Parking is $8 per vehicle. Additional pool fees may apply. 


When/Where: From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10 at the Pearl River Library, 80 Franklin Avenue.
Why Go?: Battle of the Books team members who have been gathering regularly this summer to discuss the books from the battle list and prepare for the regional battle in September will participate in a mock Battle of the Books. Championship in the Regional Battle of the Books will be held on Saturday, September 10.
Pricing: Free. No registration.

Concert by The Rockland County Concert Band
Where/When: The Pearl River Library, 80 Franklin Avenue in Pearl River; Thursday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room
Details: Led by musician Larry Zaidan, the Rockland County Concert Band will perform "a program of patriotic musical Americana."

Where/When: The Pearl River Library, 80 Franklin Avenue in
Pearl River; Friday, August 26 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Details: Teens and young adults are invited to battle. Rock and acoustic bands may send demos or samples to Christina Linder at clinder@rcls.org no later than August 12. They can also mail them to her attention at the library or drop their demo off in person.
Bands will perform for 30 minutes. First place price to be awarded.
Pricing: Free, but tickets are required for entry. Limited space and availability. Call Ms. Linder at 845.735.4084, ext. 138 for more information.

Free Shakespeare in the Park
Where/When: Tallman Mountain State Park, off Route 9W in Orangetown, on Friday, August 12 at 6 p.m.
Why Go: The Children's Shakespeare Theatre presents a stage production of HENRY V. For more information, call 845-359-0544 or 845-365-9709.
Pricing: Free admission to the play, but parking is $6 per vehicle.

Team KJ Barbecue Fundraiser
Where/When: Pearl River Elks Lodge, 2042 Elks Drive in Nanuet, on Sunday, August 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Why Go: Team KJ is a group of friends and family who are participating in the West Point triathlon on Sunday, August 14. They participate in sprint triathlons and other endurance events in an effort to raise money to find a cure for Huntington’s Disease. Their goal is to help support the families in our community affected by this disease and continue to support medical research that will ultimately find a cure. After the race on Sunday, Team KJ will host a family-friendly barbecue with music, a bouncy castle, food and drinks, face painting and raffles.

CYO Basketball Registration
Where/When: Registration for the fall basketball season at St. Aedan's will be held online at www.saintaedancyo.org until Monday, August 15 ($50 late charge after August 15).
Details: CYO basketball is open to all children in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. Limited enrollment.
Pricing: $160 base cost with a $50 uniform bond per player (which will be refunded when uniform is returned). A multiple child discount of $60 will be applied to each additional child in a family. A $25 fee will be added for non-parishioners.

Irish Set Dancing
Where/When: Children, ages 6 and above, can learn the basics of Irish set dancing and have fun at weekly dance classes held at the Ancient Order of Hibernians House in Pearl River. Contact Kathleen Collins at 718-796-3339 for more information.

New York Renaissance Faire
Where/When: Sterling Forest at 600 Route 17A in Tuxedo Park, NY; Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, from now through September 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Why Go: The Faire is a rollicking romp through Elizabethan England complete with 16th Century games, rides, arts, crafts, food, music
and dance.
Pricing: Tickets purchased in advance: Adult: $20 and children
(ages 5-12) are $10 each. Tickets purchased at the box office on event day: Adult: $22; Child (ages 5-12) is $11. Children under 5 are admitted for free.
