Free Movie Screenings, Gaming for Teens and Irish Family Festival

Looking for something to do this week with the kids? Below are several suggestions. Feel free to share your summer plans with us in the comment box below. We would love to hear how local residents are enjoying the long days of summer.

Irish Family Festival
When/Where: Saturday, July 9 from 11 a.m.
until “late.” Anderson Field, located in Orangeburg just off Veterans Memorial Drive. Turn right into Veteran Memorial Park (Hunt Road) and make the first right to the field.
Why Go?: Proceeds to benefit students of Pearl River Irish Music
Teachers, who will represent the U.S. at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Cavan, Ireland in August. In addition, there will be relay races, sack races, and face painting for kids as well as live music and food for all. Call 845-735-1205 for more information.
Pricing: $20 for adults. Children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult. 

Teen Gaming at the Pearl River Library
When/Where: Wednesday, July 6 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.;
Pearl River Library, 80 Franklin Avenue.
Why Go?: Teens in grades six through 12 are invited to bring their friends and play the latest Wii video and board games.
Pricing: Free. No registration required.

Registration for Judo/Karate Lessons
When/Where: Thursdays from July 7 to August 11; Pearl River Middle School Wrestling Room; Group A, ages 6-8, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Group B, ages 9-15, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Pricing: $30 per child. Registration required. Call the Orangetown Recreation and Parks Department for more information at 845-359-6503.

Walk Like An Egyptian Program for Kids
When/Where: Thursday, July 7 at 3 p.m.; Blauvelt Library, 541 Western Highway in Blauvelt.
Why Go?: Kids, ages five to seven, are invited to listen to stories about mummies and pyramids, plus make a craft and enjoy a snack. Pricing: Free. No registration required.

Screening Under the Stars: Free Outdoor Movie at Kensico Dam
When/Where: Thursday, July 7. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. The movie starts at sundown. Follow the signs to Kensico Dam
Plaza, which is located off the Bronx River Parkway’s Valhalla exit.
Why Go?: Don’t miss this summer’s free outdoor movie blockbuster, Shrek Forever After (Rated PG and released in 2010). Moviegoers should bring blankets and folding chairs for seating and a picnic supper. Popcorn will also be available for sale. The concession stand will be open throughout the evening. In the event of rain, the movie will be canceled. For up-to-the-minute weather cancellations,

Movie Day at the Blauvelt Library
When/Where: Friday, July 8 at 3 p.m. at The Blauvelt Library, 541 Western Highway in Blauvelt.
Why Go?: A free screening of “Gnomeo and Juliet” will be shown. The movie is Rated G and it is 84 minutes long.
Pricing: Free

Craft Day at The Blauvelt Library
When/Where: Friday, July 8 at 2 p.m. at The Blauvelt Library, 541 Western Highway in Blauvelt.
Why Go?: Kids, ages eight through 14, will learn how to make a tote bag out of duct tape.
Pricing: Free

Free Concert in the Park
When/Where: Friday, July 8 at 8 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Orangeburg.
Why Go: Presented by the Orangetown Youth Recreation, the band Blarney Stew will perform a rousing set of some Irish oldies but goodies. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Junior Golf Instructions
When/Where:
Mondays and Wednesdays from July 11 to July 25.
Why Go?: Beginner golf instructions will be provided to boys and girls, ages 8 and over. The first class will take place at the Tappan Golf Center on Route 303. Group A: 9:00–9:45 a.m. and Group B: 10:00–10:45 a.m. Limit 12 per group.
Pricing: $50 per child. Registration required. Check enrollment
availability at the Office of Recreation and Parks, 845-359-6503.

Blue Hill Future Stars
When/Where:
Tuesdays, July 12, 19, 26 and August 2 at 2 p.m.; Blue Hill Golf Course in Pearl River.
Why Go?: This non-competitive program is a four week, nine hole opportunity for Orangetown residents to play with other golfers in grades six through nine. PGA Professional Bret Watzka will oversee the program and teach swing concepts with limited instruction. Participants must provide their own clubs, a collared shirt and
soft spikes or sneakers.
Pricing: $75 per golfer. Enrollment is limited. Registration
required. Foursomes will be arranged by the Office of Recreation and Parks. For more information, call 845-359-6503.
