Freezing Rain Turns to Heavy Snow in Pearl River [VIDEO]

The snowfall started earlier than expected in Pearl River. The Orangeburg Police Department declared a snow emergency at 3 p.m. UPDATE with news of an accident early this afternoon on Orangeburg Road.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning which will be in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday for parts of the Lower Hudson Valley and is calling for one to three inches of snow this afternoon in Pearl River.

Forecasts initially called for the snow to start in the afternoon, but freezing rain turned to wet snow late Saturday morning.

The Orangetown Police Department declared a snow emergency at 3 p.m. That allows the town to restrict parking on snow emergency routes, making it easier for the Orangetown Highway Department to clear major roads.

According to the Orangetown Highway Department, there are trees down all over town and residents are asked to stay off the roads.

According to the Orangetown Police Department, there was one accident shortly after noon Saturday at the intersection of Orangeburg Road and Old Orangeburg Road.Two people were taken to Nyack Hospital. In addition to the Orangetown Police, the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, Rockland Paramedics and Orangeburg Fire Department responded.
