Menorah Lighting Kicks Off First Night Of Hanukkah

It was the eighth annual menorah lighting in Braunsdorf Park in Pearl River.

Rabbi Chaim Ehrenreich of the Chabad Jewish Enrichment Center in Chestnut Ridgepe led a ceremony to light the communal menorah in Braunsdorf Park to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah on Tuesday night.

It was the eighth annual communal menorah lighting ceremony.

A group of around 50 people gathered, sang, prayed and enjoyed some donuts. Necklaces with menorahs that lit up red or blue were handed out.

Mollie and Harold Friedman of Pearl River lit the candle for the first night of the holiday along with a young boy from the crowd. Ehrenreich wanted the oldest and youngest to come together to lit the candle.

The Friedman’s have lived in Pearl River for 51 years and said they’ve attended all the menorah lightings at the park.

“We were surprised they asked up,” Mollie Friedman said. “It’s quite an honor.”
