Orangetown Environmental Committee Announces Workshops

The Orangetown Environmental Committee will hold four free workshops at the Pearl River Public Library.

The Orangetown Environmental Committee will bring four free workshops to the Pearl River Public Library in May.

Meredith Nierenberg, coordinator for Mid-Hudson Energy Smart Communities, will be the featured speaker at one seminar 7 p.m. May 3. She will talk about New York State's Green Jobs Green New York program, which provides energy audits to home owners, businesses and non-profit organizations for free. The audits identify ways to improve efficiency to save energy and money.

The other three workshops focus on gardening and landscaping.

  • Raised Bed Gardening for Beginners -- Charles and Pam Paolino of Hook Mountain growers in Upper Nyack will speak 7 p.m. May 10.
  • Health Threats of Pesticide Use on Lawns -- Orangetown Poet Laureate and educator Rose Marie Raccioppi of Tappan is the featured speaker 7 p.m. May 18.
  • Smart, Green Landscaping with Native Plants -- Landscape Designer Rebecca Gmucs speaks 7 p.m. May 24.

The OEC will also hold its annual Recycling Fair in the fall.
