Orangetown National Night Out, Free Concert

A Patch guide to upcoming kid-friendly events and places to go with your family. This week's includes a children's concert this morning at the Pearl River Public Library.

National Night Out and SK8 Night
Where/When: The Orangetown Police Department will participate in the National Night Out/Orangetown SK8 Night Program at Veterans Memorial Park (off Hunt Road in Orangeburg) on August 2 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Why Go: There will be a portable skateboarding park and rock climbing wall. Children of all ages are invited to attend. Young children can enjoy the large inflatable bouncy castles, and parents can have their child's car seat inspected for proper installation. The event will end with a fireworks display by Garden State Fireworks, Inc.

Sukey Molloy and the Circle Song Band
Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Today, July 27 at 10:30 a.m.
Why Go: Children ages two to six years old are invited with a grown up to a performance by Sukey Molloy, an award-winning recording artist, movement and music educator, and co-founder of PlayMove&Sing, Inc.

Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Wednesday, July 27 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Why Go: Teens can learn the basics of decoupage and have fun decorating a cigar box with other recycled materials.
Pricing: Free but registration is required. For more information, inquire at the library Information Desk.

Tween Time
Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Wednesday, July 27 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Why Go:Tweens entering fourth through sixth grades will learn how to make no-oven healthy snacks from Denise Ruis and Kerri Horgan, founders of Cooktivity, LLC, a children’s cooking school based in Pearl River.
Pricing: Free, but registration is required. Call 845.735-4084 or register in person in the Children’s Reading Room.

Movie Day at the Blauvelt Library
Where/When:The Blauvelt Library located at 541 Western Highway in Blauvelt; Friday, July 29 at 3 p.m.
Why Go: Children of all ages are invited to a free screening of the movie, “Tale of Despereaux.” Rated G and 94 minutes in length.
Pricing: Free

Town of Orangetown Summer Concert Series
Where/When: Veteran's Memorial Park in Orangeburg; Friday, July 29 at 8 p.m.
Why Go: Alive N Kickin, one of the top bands in the New York Tri-State area, performs.
Pricing: Free. Bring your own blanket and lawn chair. 

Family Barbecue and Wiffle Ball Tournament
Where/When: American Legion Post 1199, Anderson Field (off Veterans Memorial Parkway and Orangeburg Road, across from Hunt Road); Sunday, July 31 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Why Go: This barbecue and wiffle ball tournament is to support Paul Valentine for Town Council. For more information, contact Karen Swift at 845.359.6336.
Pricing: $35 per person, includes BBQ, beer, wine, and soda. Kids under the age of 12 are admitted for free.

Free Garden Tour
Where/When: Cornell University Cooperative Extension at 10 Patriot Hills Drive in Stony Point; Sunday, July 31 at 1 p.m.
Why Go: Take an hour-long guided tour of the garden grounds the last Sunday of each month from April through October. Children will enjoy activities hosted by Master Gardeners and explore the gardens at your own pace. The Cornell University Cooperative Extension is located east off Exit 14 on the Palisades Parkway. Go to the first traffic light and turn left on Patriot Hills Drive.
Pricing: Free


Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Monday, August 1 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Why Go: Miss Annadora will teach kids entering grades 1st through 3rd about Japanese pop culture and how to make candy sushi.
Pricing: Free, but registration is required. Register starting, Monday, July 25. Call 845.735-4084 or register in person in the Children’s Reading Room.


Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue; Tuesday, August 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Why Go: Preschoolers can enjoy stories, songs, fun and make crafts at this hour-long story time get-together.  
Pricing: Free. No registration but a valid library card must be shown.

Highview Playground Rummage Sale
Where/When: Highview Playground site at Church street and Highview Avenue in Nanuet, Drop off your donated items on Friday 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. for the rummage sale on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. http://patch.com/A-ks0Y
Why Go: Clean out your attic and donate your items for the new Highview Community Playground or stop by and buy something from the rummage sale. 100 percent of the proceeds go to the future playground.
Cost: Free
