Pearl River Ice Cream Sundae Record Official

The Franklin Avenue Playground Committee is selling t-shirts to celebrate the world record-setting ice cream sundae they built on the Central Ave. Field in Pearl River in June.

The Franklin Avenue Playground Committee organized the construction of the longest ice cream sundae ever made June 8.

Guinness made it official late in the summer and the committee presented the award to Principal Maureen Alaimo at back to school night Sept. 12.

"When we got it we were so excited," said Donna Warren of the Franklin Avenue Playground Committee.

The committee is celebrating the record and continuing its fundraising efforts by selling t-shirts that read "I Ate My Way to a World's Record!" and include details of the event. Orders are due by Oct. 5. The order form and pictures of both sides of the t-shirts are attached to this report.

"The t-shirts are a celebration. (The record-setting day) was so cool. It was so over and above our expectations," Warren said.

More than 1,000 people packed the Central Ave. Field that day, with more than 750 paying the $10 per bowl to help devour the record-setting sundae, which was officially 406 feet, eight inches long.

Warren said the committee is nearly halfway to its goal of $100,000 to rebuild the playground at Franklin Avenue Elementary School.

"We're getting there," Warren said. "It is slowly, but surely, coming along. We want everybody to play (at the playground), but we want something safe and reliable."

The Franklin Ave. Playground Committee will be holding a Mum sale Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Franklin Ave. Elementary. They are also planning another Casino Night, which was a successful fundraiser for them back in March. The next one is tentatively scheduled for April.
