Pearl River Soapbox Race to Roll Down Central Ave. Sunday

The name changed over the years, but the Pearl River Soapbox Race keeps rolling.

The event, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pearl River, will run for the 13th time since its return from a 30-year hiatus Sunday on Central Ave. in Pearl River. The street will close at approximately 7:30 a.m., with the race running from 8 a.m. to about 1 p.m.

"For me, the best part of the race is seeing the kids going down the hill with smile on their faces," said John Buonadonna of the Pearl River Rotary.

There are approximately 60 standard entrants along with 12 Buddyball cars, which have seats for a disabled child and a buddy who will go down the hill with them. There are trophies and prizes for first, second and third place and medals for the other racers. There are also trophies for the Buddyball kids.
