The National Weather Service is predicting a "prolonged period of snow" starting late Wednesday night that could last into Friday morning, dropping between six and eight inches of snow in Rockland County.
The Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services also sent out a warning Tuesday about the possibly hazardous weather conditions, which could also include heavy winds and frigid temperatures. The warning defines blizzard conditions as wind gusts greater than 35 miles per hour and wind chill temperatures below 10 degrees.
Orange & Rockland Utilities declared a company-wide stormwatch, citing local forecasts calling for between five and 12 inches of snowfall the remainder of this week. The possible snow comes as many local schools are returning from winter break Thursday. Nanuet, Nyack and Pearl River schools are scheduled to be open. Clarkstown and South Orangetown are set to return Jan. 6.
