Soapbox Trails Just Part of Busy Pearl River Weekend

The annual Pearl River Soapbox Race is scheduled for June 2, but there will be a preview this Sunday on Central Avenue in Pearl River.
The Rotary Club of Pearl River, which sponsors the race, will hold inspections and practice trials Sunday from 9 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. on Central Avenue from just below Louie's on the Avenue down to Pearl River Hook and Ladder. That section of Central Avenue will be closed until the trials are over.
"Right now we have about 60 children and 12 buddyball kids signed up," said Rotary Club of Pearl River President John Buonadonna. "As soon as they have their car inspected, they can go down the hill. They can go as many times as they want as long as their parents will bring them back up the hill."
The Rotary Club of Pearl River will also hold the 30th Annual Jake Amann Fishing Contest in Memorial Park Saturday from 10 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. in Memorial Park in Orangeburg. For more information on that event, check out this week's Patch family planner
The Rotary events are just part of a busy weekend in Pearl River and the rest of Orangetown.
In addition to providing plenty of choices for great activities, these events could also provide a challenge for drivers with road closures, detours and parking restrictions.
Among this weekend's events are:
Saturday

  • Orangetown Highway Department Open House from 10 a.m. to noon at 119 Route 303 in Orangeburg.
  • The African-American Day Parade at 2 p.m. in Nyack, which had been postponed earlier this month. The parade will be followed by a festival in Nyack Memorial Park with food, music and other entertainment. There is a job fair and two new additions are a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a community line dance.
Sunday
  • The Tom Scognamiglio Volley Tennis Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday on the tennis courts at Pearl River High School.
  • The Gran Fondo Bike Race will roll through Rockland County starting a little after 7 p.m. Sunday morning and going into the late afternoon. For more information, read this report on Patch
  • Nyack's Famous street fair in downtown Nyack from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be hand made crafts, art, gifts, antiques, a children's play area and food. Admission is free and the event will go on rain or shine. No pets are allowed.
