Teens Learn Wok Basics in Chinese Cooking Class at Library

This summer's reading program's theme is "Around the World." The teen program at the Pearl River Library used this as an opportunity to teach a Chinese cooking class.

In conjunction with the Pearl River library's summer theme of "Around the World," Norma Chang, author of "Wokking Your Way to Low Fat Cooking" and "My Students' Favorite Chinese Recipes," taught easy and delicious meal ideas to youths in the teen program.

She emphasized that, although the recipes are a wonderful guide, the teens should feel free to taste and adjust their dishes. She also added that sometimes changing the recipes to include vegetables that are in season makes the meal more inexpensive and fun.

The students were divided into three groups, each cooking a different recipe:

  • Chicken with three peppers
  • Chicken with bok choy, snow peas, and baby corn
  • Chicken with broccoli

After cooking, the students sampled each of the dishes including their own. Although Chang told the students that if they didn't like a particular vegetable or ingredient they were allowed to politely throw it out, every teen had an empty plate with no compliants in the end.

(Norma Chang's cook books are available on her website luv2wok.com and on Amazon.com)
