[UPDATE]Video Causes Uproar in Verplanck

A video shot five years ago that expressed anti-American sentiment has people calling for a boycott of a popular Verplanck deli and has led to a state police investigation.

UPDATE, 9:15 a.m.: Here's a link to another YouTube video. No anti-American language is used, but the video does show Morshed getting in a verbal dispute with at least one customer.

Ammar Morshed said he never thought a mistake made five years ago would come back to haunt him.

“I love America, it’s my second home,” Morshed, 20, said. “I live in the community. I went to school here. I would never say anything bad about this country.”

Morshed, whose family owns the Trails End Deli in Verplanck, is at the center of an uproar that has slowly spiraled through the community.

In a YouTube video taken five years ago, Morshed can be seen talking to two customers sitting in a car outside the deli. The customers use profane language and spout anti-American rhetoric during the clip.

Morshed said it was part of a series of videos that were taken to show friends and family members back home in Yemen.

“The people in the video aren’t even Arabic,” Morshed said. “One is Dominican and the other Puerto Rican. They’re the ones saying all that stuff. You can hear it on the video. I try to change the subject and get them to talk about music. I don’t know why they decided to put it out now. They’re just trying to start trouble.”

A link to the video can be found here. The video wasn’t attached to this story due to the explicit language used throughout the clip.

A Facebook group called “Boycott Anti-American Trails End Deli, Verplanck, NY”  has already sprung up and has more than 1,700 members. Although no threats of physical harm have been made to workers at the store, a number comments can be found from people expressing outrage

Cortlandt town Supervisor Linda Puglisi said she is aware of the situation, but declined to comment.

“It’s a police matter and the state police are looking into it and monitoring the situation,” Puglisi said. “It’s under investigation and I don’t want to say anything that could impact the investigation.”

I support The boycott, the Curry's, and all the people affected by these foolish kids. (Well written Joe!) Hopefully cops are looking into any issues w/ weapons, public safety, etc. I feel that everyone in the video is guilty by association... The deli owner's son encouraged the other two kids by keeping the film rolling. (consciously or not) With that being said, I'm not a fan of his & won't patronize his family's deli. I don't think this family should come to Cortlandt Manor either... that's really not an option for the family & pretty silly to say. I actually feel bad for the family - their idiot son just ruined their lives. What tops it all off, (which was mentioned already) is the kid was unable to show remorse for what he did. (you do hear him being coached on what to say to the camera as an apology), that sickened me more than anything. Just an FYI: I'm AMERICAN, white in color, Italian, German, & Irish decent, i live in Cortlandt Manor, work in Peekskill in an extremely diverse environment. I'm AMERICAN & i stand by my people & my country for what i feel is right! God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!

what i don't get is that this person has been seen with guns, assault rifles at a childrens playground and i don't see anything stating if anyone has contacted the police or anyone else about it.

No, neither one of the guys in the video are acquaintances of the deli family's son. They are Hispanics! I don't believe all this tempest in a teapot! This is stupid. The guy trash talking in the video is (as Patty V. above points out so eloquently) an impotent loser - a sad product of "public education" (if he even managed to graduate from high school.) And, I love the hypocrisy being shown here -- We worship our Constitution and the 1st Amendment -- yet we freak out and condemn people when they USE IT and say things "certain people don't like". Umm..that's called censorship and is why the 1st Amendment exists! Can't have it both ways people!!

Correcting my post (because you can't edit it yourself...grrrr) -- First sentence....what I meant to type was: No, neither one of the guys in the video are Mr. Morshed or family members of the Deli owners. They are two "friends" of Mr. Morshed, who, were acting stupid and talking trash.
