What Do You Want From Your Library?

The Pearl River Public Library held a public budget hearing May 31.

The Pearl River Public Library held a public hearing of its 2011-12 budget with an opportunity to meet board of trustees candidate Debra Garcia-McDermott Tuesday.

No members of the public attended to voice any concerns regarding the proposed $2.18 million budget, which will be voted on June 14, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the library. The tax levy increase is 2.9 percent, but that comes to an estimated increase of $7 per year for the average homeowner in Pearl River.

"(The budget) will allow the Library to continue to provide all of the library services the community has come to value, and in my opinion, they greatly appreciate," said library director Kathy Rose. "It may sound cliché, but there is something for everybody at your public library. We provide materials, programs and services from toddler age through adult through our seniors."

The library already takes some input from the community, including a teen library council which has recommended the addition of making video games available to borrow, but the question of the day seems to be another opportunity for Pearl River residents to speak on this topic.

What do you want from your library? Is there some service you want to see protected in future budgets? Something you would like to see added?
