Fiesta Dance Brings Mexico to Pearl River

The annual Daddy Daughter dance at Evans Park was Fiesta Dance themed.

Fiesta Dance was the annual Daddy Daughter dance’s theme this year and flavors of Mexico were everywhere. Sombreros and streamers covered the multipurpose room at Evans Park Elementary School as third and fourth grader girls swayed with their daddies in hand.

The Fiesta Dance Committee --  Peggy Conway, Joan Butterworth, Jackie McGee, Chrissy Dillon, Maureen McIntyre, and Kathleen Nanry -- watched the girls dance and took videos while the fathers went from dancing to sitting and chatting while the girls danced some party numbers, and then back up to dancing.

“The girls look forward to the dances,” said Chris Ritchie, father of third-grader Allison. “I was here with my older daughter so this is my third dance. They talk about it for months and then the day comes and they get so excited.”

All girls in grades three and four were invited to attend. Forty four girls decided to come to the Fiesta this year.

The tables were colorful with photo centerpieces of major landmarks in Mexico and South and Central America. Third graders are currently learning about Mexico in class and so the dance committee deemed the theme appropriately educational.

“The school has been concentrating on international studies and we thought it would be a good thing to tie into the dance,” said event coordinator and past PTA president Jackie McGee, who has a daughter in third grade.

Food served consisted of quesadillas, taquitos, chips and salsa, and other Mexican cuisine options. The servers were Pearl River High School students earning community service hours. Every PRHS student is required to have at least 10 hours of community service each year; however, students get rewarded if they surpass the limit.

The Pearl River School District emphasizes community and often has events such as these, as well as concerts and plays open to the public.
