Large Pearl River Middle School Cast Performs Wonka Jr.

The Pearl River Middle Schoolauditorium was packed April 1 and April 2 for Wonka Jr., directed by Tom Price.

Pearl River Middle School's Wonka Jr. cast of over 100 students put on a show and was surprisingly and refreshingly original for a packed auditorium.

"It's good to work as a team and it gives you confidence. I'm definitely glad I have theater," said seventh-grader Dana McGuire.

The show featured three sets of Oompa Loompas, separated by grades, to ensure every student had a moment to shine. Tom Price, director and art teacher in the Pearl River School District, believes that everyone should be given a chance to experience live theater and enjoy everything it has to offer.

Price made all 120 costumes by, including the hilarious green Oompa Loompa wigs. Costume mistress Jean Beckerle measured all the students and organized with Price. Their effort shined through the production. The costumes matched the whimsical set, also designed and created by Price.

The golden ticket winners were wonderful actors, playing each part uniquely. Veruca Salt, in particular, was so perfectly annoying in her part.

An audience favorite was the Jersey Shore-eqsue Oompa Loompas, complete with orange skin and big hair. The accents were adorable and helped the students create very unique and funny characters.

Price held each rehearsal like an acting workshop, teaching acting and theater techniques and vocabulary as well as rehearsing for the script. This gave each of the cast members a very personal experience with the production.

"I think the main idea in Wonka is to think positive. It's what all the songs are about," said fifth-grader Jean-Paul Jeremie.

"It's fun to be with friends," said seventh-grade Oompa Loompa Anastasia Creight.

Willy Wonka chocolate was sold during intermission, adding to the atmosphere and hype of the show. Meg Sammon, who donated refreshments, and Carmela Kinnally, a makeup mom, sold the chocolate and flowers to benefit the school.
