Holiday Shopping: Gifts For Her

These are some places to pick up gifts for that special lady in your life

As the holidays near, your good friends at Patch are here to assist you in getting through the season while still shopping locally.

This installment of the 2011 Holiday Shopping Guide deals with places to pick up a gift for her. Enjoy!

Sitzmark Ski & Patio Shop - 125 East Central Avenue, Pearl River - 914-735-2277

This store has something for those looking to hit the slopes after the holidays, as well as items for those who aren’t interesting in skiing or snowboarding.

Store manager Vivian Duesbout said for the skiers, Sitzmark sells a number of items that make for nice holiday gifts, such as goggles and helmet covers that look like mohawks and dreadlocks.

Sitzmark also has items for those looking to get in some skiing without ditching their electronics.

“Nobody goes anywhere without an iPod or Smartphone anymore,” Duesbout said. “So we have a few things for those people.”

One is a pair of gloves that work with touch screens.

“You don’t have to take off the glove and have your bare hand out in the cold,” she said.

Another is a snow cap with speakers inside and a plug that connects to music-playing device so you don’t have to wear headphones. She said those have been popular sellers so far, even for people who don’t ski or snowboard.

“We’ve sold a lot to people who want them just to do things like walk around Rockland Lake when it’s cold out,” she said.

Another popular item for the skiers is a Transpack bag, which packs two boots and a helmet into a backpack-like contraption.

“It makes it easy to carry everything and not lose anything,” she said. “It’s really good for kids to have.”

The store also has skis and snowboards for sale, including a bundle for Volkl skis, which are handmade German brand of skis. They also have deals for children’s items, and set up the bundles for you. They have a full service part of the store for skis and snowboards.

Sanctuary - 60 South Broadway, Nyack - 845-353-2126

Sanctuary has been at its current location for about three years and is a good place to stop by for those looking to pick up anything from candles to jewelry to pottery to lamps and more.

A lot of the jewelry in the store is handmade by owner Laura Gould at the store itself. And if the jewelry isn’t made by Gould, it’s made by other local artisans.

“We have a handmade fair trade philosophy here,” she said. “The people making the things you buy are the ones the money goes back to.”

Gould added the store has a lot of “unique exotic finds” for sale as well.

“There’s nothing in the store that is mass produced,” she said.

Sanctuary also has handmade Christmas ornaments that make nice holiday gifts, as well as plenty of items around $5 that would make nice gifts.

“We have a wide range of things here for a wide range of prices,” Gould said.

Sanctuary also has a lot of USA-made organic clothing Gould said is very popular.

Open Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- 200 Sout Main Streert, New City - 845-638-1988

This store is in the shopping center right near Cinema 6, and is the place to go if you’re looking to pick up a bag for the holidays.

“We have all different kinds of bags,” said Pauline Gertler, owner of the store. “We have everything, from day to evening bags, all different prices.”

Gertler said some nice brands of handbags the store carries are Brighton and MZ Wallace, which they have in a number of different colors.

Helen’s also sells luggage, jewelry, sunglasses and a number of other items that make for nice gifts. One popular item Gertler said makes for a great stocking stuffer is the Spibelt, which is a tiny elastic pouch that stretches out wide and can be worn around the waist. Gertler said people have been using them to carry phones, cameras, keys, credits cards, etc.

“We can’t keep them in stock,” she said. Every time we get them in people snatch them up quickly.”

Open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

Tiara Jewelers - 132 Route 59, Nanuet - 845-623-1245

This jewelry store is located in Rockland Plaza near Barnes & Noble, and is the place to stop for those looking to pick up some jewelry for a loved one this holiday season.

“The biggest thing right now is Pandora beads,” said owner Peter Helou. “This is the hottest thing we carry. It’s these bracelets that you buy little beads for a little bit at a time.”

Helou said these are good for all demographics.

“They’re more personalized,” he said. “People can come in and pick out different beads that have different meanings behind why they picked them.”

In addition to those, Tiara also carries a number of other items. Silver goods are popular right now, Helou said, because the price of gold is so high. He said they also sell gold items, and “better valued gold” items, ones that contain gold and are still tasteful and elegant, but maybe not as pricey.

They also sell watches and do watch repairs on site.

Open Monday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Wednesday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
