O&R: Outage Map Down; 67,900 in Rockland Without Power

Orange & Rockland's outage map is down with technical difficulties Thursday morning. The company reports 170,000 customers without power, including 67,900 in Rockland County.

Orange & Rockland customers looking for an update on power outages throughout the region will have a harder time finding one this morning.

The outage map on O&R's website is out of service as of 8 a.m. Thursday due to technical difficulties.

In the latest update on power restoration at 8 a.m. Thursday morning, O&R reported 67,900 customers in Rockland County who were still without power and 170,000 in the company's entire distribution area.

So far, power has been restored to 52,000 O&R customers while the primary focus is on epairing and rebuilding transmission lines and substations. According to O&R, work is complete on all of its 17 substations and 21 of the 27 damaged transmission lines. Both were required to return power to the entire system.

The most recent previous updates from O&R can be found here.

The following is O&R's explanation of its plan to restore it system.

  • Damage assessment on state, county and major local roads.
  • Reconstruction of the distribution system on state roads, followed by county roads. After that work is done, crews will be shifted to restoring circuits feeding critical infrastructure and services. These critical facilities include local governments whose operations provide essential services required by residents.
  • Restoration then moves onto critical infrastructure followed by the largest block of customers out of service, smaller blocks of customers and then individual customer service outages.
  • As restoration continues, site safety personnel are working to ensure public safety by securing downed wires on major roads.

Will there be trash pickuP in South Nyack on Friday so we can get rid of spoiled food?
William Demarest (Editor) November 1, 2012 at 02:03 pm
The emergency shelter at Rockland Community College is still open for residents to use, according to the Red Cross.
Emily November 1, 2012 at 03:34 pm
Mary Anne I understand there will be trash pick up.

This map has been of no use anyway no it's no big loss. All it tells you is what everybody knows and has yet to be updated with any restore time estimates.

Where is O&R. Downed trees and power lines and not one truck in site.
Sick-n-Tired November 1, 2012 at 07:02 pm
I agree. I just drove from Pearl River to Stony Point and back and did not see one O&R truck anywhere.
brian November 1, 2012 at 07:27 pm
has anyone seen any work crews anywhere in town?
Karen Pabon November 1, 2012 at 07:36 pm
where is o&r certianly not in valley cottage...............i have driven to bardonia, theills and stony point and not one crew in sight....i live on a main road and no tree removal or any o&r crews...no power since the storm
brian November 1, 2012 at 08:03 pm
i am sure (or at least i hope) they are doing a lot of work somewhere, but one would think they would appreciate the value in sending a visible message that they are "on the job" by at least putting out one work crew in a very visible location where we can all see that they are indeed working to get the system back up and running. I was out doing some clearing of my own along midland ave. yesterday for about an hour, and I saw the verizon fios guy drive by three times, but nary an O&R vehicle in sight.

I just did another tour of Rockland in my quest for fuel. Once again I did not see one O&R truck. I saw many Verizon workers. I cannot even blame the field workers for O&R. They just go where they are told to. I think it's the piss poor planning of the managers. They had this same problem this time last year and you would of thought they would of learned something from their incompetence.

ddi you find fuel?
Pearl Hogan November 1, 2012 at 10:46 pm
I have also been all around and have only seen Verizon trucks. No town, county, state or O & R. Are they all in Piermont and Stony Point since they were hit the hardest I believe. If so, than that is where they should be.

The Citgo on Middletown Road in Pearl River (across from King Kone) is open and the line is moving quickly.

Sick-n-Tired - How do you actually plan for a storm with this level of destruction? O&R has to react to what happens. Since you took a tour of Rockland, you must know how daunting the task is. First of all, in order for O&R to even make repairs, trees have to be cleared first. Many times that job is out of their hands. In order for them to be able to address the situation to your satisfaction, they would have to increase their field staff by double or triple. Then you would just complain about how high your rates are. Stop playing Monday Morning Quarterback and have some patience. I'm sure everyone is doing whatever they can to get this difficult situation resolved.

Michelle - sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but my husband just called and told me that the attendent at the Citgo station said that they were almost out of gas. Sorry! Good Luck!

does stilettos on 59 have power?
Sick-n-Tired November 1, 2012 at 11:53 pm
Yes I found gas in Haverstraw but the station ran out shortly after I left.
@CR I am being patient and I know this is a daunting task. This is the business they are in and have always been in. They know they will have days like this and should have plans to tackle these issues. As I said my complaint is not with the field guys, it's the people who plan this or in this case what they didn't plan for. If I saw the trucks out there dealing with this I would be satisfied. I do not see them at all. All I see is the town workers breaking their tails moving trees and the Verizon workers. Isn't this what we are all overcharged for every month?
CR November 2, 2012 at 12:20 am
The Exxon on Kinderkamack in Montvale (across from Taco Bell) was just receiving fuel from a tanker.
CR November 2, 2012 at 12:24 am
The problem is that in order to address the widespread damage from a storm of this magnitude, O&R would need to increase its workforce by two or three-fold (or more). This of course would increase our rates dramatically. Either pay for a workforce that sits around during non-emergencies, or do the best they can with the size they currently have. I really doubt that management is sitting around with their thumbs up their a**es doing nothing. It's always easy to blame someone else.
Sick-n-Tired November 2, 2012 at 12:51 am
Really? Who is to blame, you or I? Maybe the guys who planned all the tree trimming this past summer so these problems would not happen. This situation is the result of reactive planning instead of proactive planning.
Tom November 4, 2012 at 02:26 pm
The tree blocking William Street in Pearl River was removed by 6:30pm yesterday & no sign of an O&R repair crew as of 9:00am this morning.

An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend
