Pearl River Businesses Prepare for Halloween Trick or Treating

Downtown Pearl River will be open for trick or treating from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today. UPDATE: Trick or Treating is on for downtown Pearl River today.

Kim Crispino and Annie McGovern of Dance Central Performing Arts in Pearl River took on a new task this year -- organizing the annual trick or treating in downtown Pearl River.

Between 75 and 80 businesses will take part part on Halloween, putting up decorations and handing out candy to children from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

"It's going great," McGovern said. "It's really a great experience. The (Pearl River) Chamber (of Commerce) had it all put together. They really helped every step of the way.

"It's craziness and it's fun. We're expecting about 2,000 kids."

The trick or treating will run down East Central Avenue from TD Bank to Route 304. It will also be on Williams Street from A Personal Touch to C-Tech and on Main Street from Ichiban Japanese Restaurant to the Pearl River Public Library.

Participating restaurants will have a sign and balloons from Elegant Balloons. McGovern said that she and Crispino are still looking for volunteers to help bring the baloons to their locations Monday afternoon.

"We can only walk them two at a time so they don't get tangled, so we are looking to get as many volunteers as we can get at 1 p.m. in front of the old AT&T," McGovern said.

Some businesses that are normally closed on Mondays will open to take part. In addition to candy, many of the businesses hand out coupons.

"We give candy and coupons for a free dance class and half off registration," McGovern said. "Businesses give out coupons for the parents and the kids get the candy. This helps generate business in town."

Providing a safe place for kids to go trick or treating is also a key motivation.

"We do it for the kids," McGovern said. "That's the main priority."

Crispino confirmed Monday morning that trick or treating in Pearl River is on despite ongoing issues with power outages and wires being down in the community.
