Get Tutored By Teens In Latest Technology At Pearl River Public Library

Having trouble with the latest technological gadget? Find help at the library through the Tech Tutor Program!

Every Friday for the month of July the Pearl River Room at the library is transformed into a technology classroom, where everything is topsy turvy. The teens are the tutors and the adults are the students.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Teen volunteers are available to help patrons and answer questions about the latest technology.

Each session is a half hour and must be scheduled by appointment. This is to ensure that the patron registered is paired up with a teen that has some experience with the device they need help with.

Cell phone questions such as how to retrieve voice messages, send text messages and adjust ringtones have been the most popular with basic computer needs running a close second. Basic computer training includes setting up an email account, attaching documents and general web searches. Many seniors have also come in looking for help with e-readers. The teens have been showing them how to download e-books from the library’s online portal OverDrive, to their tablets or e-reading devices.

One patron came in with her Blackberry not needing help with how to use it, but just wanting to ask the teens what they thought the hottest apps were so she could add some to her smart phone. The seniors were happy to have most of their questions answered and if the teens couldn’t answer a particular question the library definitely had “a book for that.”

There are still two more weeks for the Tech Tutoring program at the library, so if you have any questions about a new technological gadget and are looking for answers, give the Pearl River Public Library a call to set up an appointment with a Teen Tech Tutor!
