Families Take to the Streets on Pearl River Day

Hundreds of families came out to enjoy Pearl River Day on Saturday.

Despite forecasted rain, hundreds of families came out to enjoy Pearl River Day on Saturday.

Local businesses displayed their best products and services, while people throughout the town showed off their many talents at the annual event organized by the Pearl River Chamber of Commerce.

Students of Nyemchek’s Dance School, Dance Central Performing Arts, and Verlin School of Irish Dance performed. Students from Shuko Kai Karate showed off their moves.  And Rockland Conservatory of Music and Tappan Zee Chorus gave musical performances.

Pizza, lemonade, kettle corn, ice cream, and hotdogs were a special treat, along with bouncy castles, pumpkin painting, and sand art for the kids.  Local restaurants sold food out on the street, and many local businesses displayed their unique, often handmade, artisan products.

“It’s great to see so many local businesses out here," said Matthew Kenny.  "Many people forget we have these businesses and it’s nice to have a day where everyone can come out and support them."

Many groups were asking for help to improve parts of Pearl River. Children from Franklin Avenue School were asking for donations to help build a new playground.  Anyone who would like to donate or volunteer can send their support to the Franklin Ave Playground Committee c/o Franklin Ave Elem. School, 48 Franklin Ave, Pearl River, NY 10965.

The Pearl River Idol competition is a favorite of the day, and finalists Tara DiSanto and Nikki Bucci dazzled the audiences with their performances in the final round.  Nikki Bucci, performing "Firework" by Katy Perry, ultimately won the competition by receiving the loudest cheers from the audience.
