Obituary: Mark A. Griffith, Sr.; 83

Mark A. Griffith, a prominent Pearl River businessman, died on June 11 at age 83.

Griffith, who retired to Fredrick, MD in 2009, had two children with his wife and Pearl River High School sweetheart Anna Laura Griffith—Mark Jr. and Diane—as well as five grandchildren  

His daughter worked with him for the family insurance company, The Griffith Agency insurance company founded in 1941. His wife, who died of cancer at age 57, predeceases Griffith. He later caught the eye of Joanne Shalkop, a Pearl River High School teacher and administrator.

One of Griffith’s proudest accomplishments was collecting scrap metal for the war effort at age 12 during WWII, setting the town record. He also served the U.S. military in the Korean War.
