Pearl River Sports: Three Pirates Headed to State Track

Pearl River's Brian Cook ran the best time in the state this year, 9:18.01, and broke his own school record in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase during the second day of Section 1 state track and field qualifying Friday at White Plains High School.

Cook's time was also the second-fastest in Rockland County history and third best ever in Section 1.

Cook is one of three Pearl River athletes who will compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships Friday and Satuday at Middletown High School in Middletown, NY.

Kelly Hayes qualified in both the 3,000 and the 1,500 in the Division I girls meet. She won the 1,500 Friday at White Plains with a time of 4:35.77.  During the first day of qualifying Friday at Arlington, Hayes finished second to Arlington's Bella Burda in the 3,000, but earned her spot in the NYSPHSAA meet because her time of 10:23.43 was under the state standard.

Amanda Moroney of Pearl River finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.89 Friday at Arlington, also good enough to beat the state standard.
