Letter to the Editor: Stop DEC Plan for Piermont Marsh

Greetings, I’m Scott, & have lived here in Piermont since 1996.

Just a few Earth Day observations and comments.

  •  The marsh is home to many animals and plants.
  •  The marsh protected many Piermonters during Sandy’s assault.
  •  The marsh apparently filters pollutants.
  •  The marsh is truly a natural beauty.
  •  I like to kayak in the marsh.
Granted, I took the little yellow school bus to special ed. But it appears to me, the phragmites roots—observed at low tide—are deeply rooted in the soil, like bamboo, & like bamboo, very difficult to root out, or “eradicate” as suggested by the DEC via any SAFE means.

I suggest taking these seemingly misappropriated funds for this dangerous experimental science project and instead diverting them to:

  •  Regularly cleaning the marsh of trash & debris.
  •  Introducing children and adults via suspended foot bridges into it wonder.
  •  Policing the marsh for polluters and poachers of its fragile-endangered protected wildlife.
  •  Prohibit the use of jet skis in the marsh!

The phragmites, like many of us, are immigrants, now part of the fabric of this wonderful diverse community where the mountain meets the sea, and we live. Let’s not screw it up!

“Let the phragmites stay!"

Hey! Don’t worry! There will be many self-serving opportunities for all of us to screw up this town. But for now, leave our beautiful marsh alone! Let the phragmites & all the creatures that call it home, live!

Friends, neighbors, town counsel, & noted environmental experts.

Please don’t napalm our marsh!
