Rockland Students Collect for Typhoon Victims in Phillipines

The Tappan Zee High School COVE program teamed with the Blauvelt Lions Leo Club to collect items for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which left over 5,000 people dead and, by some estimates, hundreds of thousands displaced when it struck the Philippines last month.

They gathered clothing, canned goods, stuffed animals and toiletries in 37 large boxes, which the Blauvelt Fire Department helped them  bring to a New Jersey shipping company to send to the devastated area.

"We ran the collection for just a week, due to shipping time constraints,a and were amazed at the quick response from the students and the community, who brought items to Tappan Zee High School as soon as the request went out," said Tricia Castelli, the adviser for the Leo Club at Tappan Zee High School. "It is always wonderful to see how our students and their families are always there to help out in these situations."

Castelli worked with Denise Dubois, Elise Glickman and Rizza Pielago to coordinate the effort.
