Pearl River Memorial Day Weekend Centers Around Braunsdorf Park

Braunsdorf Park in Pearl River will once again be a central point for Memorial Day weekend in Pearl River.

The 24-hour vigil over crosses bearing the names of Pearl River residents who died while serving in the military begins noon Sunday and continues until noon Monday at Braunsdorf, which is on the corner of Central Ave. and Main St. The public is encouraged to sign up for a time slot.

The candle light vigil is set honoring Rockland County residents who died in wars is set for 8 p.m. Sunday in Braunsdorf Park. 

The John H. Secor American Legion Post 329 of Pearl River Memorial Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. at First Niagara Bank on Middletown Road. The route goes South from there until turning right on East Central Ave., then down the hill to Braunsdorf Park. 

The parade is followed by a ceremony at approximately 11 a.m. The primary guest speaker is Colonel David Bennett of the Defense Thread Reduction Agency. Mike Anthony, Director of Field Assistance-Science and Technology for United States Forces in Afghanistan will also speak. 

Elsewhere in Orangetown, The Raymond W. DeMeola VFW Post # 1615 will observe Memorial Day Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Walkway of American Heroes in Camp Shanks Memorail Park in Tappan. 

The watch fire at Piermont Pier will be lit at approximately 11:30 p.m May 29.
