$30,000 in Jewelry Stolen in 'Kick-In' Burglary at Home

Orangetown police checking for links to rash of similar incidents in New Jersey.

Orangetown police are investigating possible ties between the $30,000 theft of jewelry during a "kick-in" burglary at a Blauvelt home and a rash of similar incidents in northern New Jersey.

As the investigation continues, detectives warn homeowners that they should make sure their alarm systems are activated when they leave their homes as a measure of protection. If you don't have an alarm system, police suggest making certain that you leave on some lights inside your home when you go out.

The current burglary probe is the result of an incident that took place just before 8 p.m. on Thursday at a mountaintop home on Valenza Lane in Blauvelt, where homeowners arrived home to find a ground-level basement door kicked in. At the time, the homeowners thought thieves were still inside the house.

Orangetown and nearby South Nyack-Grand View police surrounded the house and a K-9 unit was called in from Clarkstown police. Investigators soon learned that the thieves had left the home — apparently having left the home through a kitchen door and fleeing into the thick woods nearby.

Detectives said $30,000 worth of jewelry and watches were taken in the burglary and they found that the alarm panel in the basement had the wires cut and had been disabled. No lights had been left on in the house while the homeowners were out for several hours.

Orangetown police said they are working with police in Bergen County, NJ, in their investigation because the incident is similar to recent kick-in burglaries in northern Bergen County. Police asks residents with information about the Blauvelt incident to call them at 845-359-2121.

In addition to using precautions such as leaving lights on and activiating alarm systems, police urge the public to watch for suspicious vehicles or activity in their neighborhood and to report it to police.
