Cell Phone Violation Leads to Drug Charge in Pearl River for Piermont Man

A Piermont man stopped for driving while using a hand-held cellular telephone at Veterans Memorial Park in Orangeburg was charged with driving while his ability was impaired by drugs, according to Orangetown Police.

Oswald D. Paredes, 27, of 9 Lawrence Park, Drive, Piermont, was stopped at 8:50 p.m. on Friday by a town officer as he was driving a 1999 Honda Civic. As Paredes was being cited for the cell phone violation, police said, a town officer noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside the car.

Police said Paredes appeared to be under the influence of marijuana and he failed field sobriety checks. Paredes was taken to Nyack Hospital for a blood test in connection with the incident.

Paredes was charged with driving while impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, and faces a hearing in Orangetown Town Court on April 16.
