Coyote Attacks Orangeburg Woman

Orangetown police report a woman attacked by a coyote this morning in Orangeburg.

According to police, the 51-year-old Orangeburg woman told officers that she was walking her dog near 15 Greywood Drive before 7 a.m. when the coyote approached her and attacked her. The woman was bitten by the coyote on her left leg, causing a puncture wound.

The woman said the coyote seemed more focused on her and not her dog. The dog was not injured.

The woman took off her jacket while the coyote was attacking her and used it as a shield, police said.

The coyote ran into a backyard where it was shot and killed by an Orangetown Police Officer.

The woman ran to a neighbor’s home where she took refuge.

Rockland Paramedics treated the woman at the scene and she was transported by South Orangetown Ambulance to Nyack Hospital for treatment.

Orangetown Animal Control responded and removed the coyote to the Rockland County Medical Examiners office where the animal's head will be removed and sent to the State Police Lab in Albany for rabies testing, police said.
