Dominican College Student Dies in Crash the Day before Graduating

Vaughna Jarvis, a Dominican College student who was to graduate May 18 from the school's nursing program, died May 17 after a one-car crash on the Taconic State Parkway south of Peekskill Hollow Road.

She was headed home from work, police said.

State troopers found the Poughkeepsie resident at 7:50 a.m. unconscious at the crash scene with massive internal injuries.

She was transported by a Putnam Valley Fire Department ambulance to Hudson Valley Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary scene investigation and witness interviews indicated that Jarvis was northbound on the parkway in a 2002 Toyota Camry when she attempted to change lanes after passing a vehicle.

Police said she lost control of her car, drove off the road, and struck a ditch off the right shoulder. The car then rolled over and struck a tree before coming to rest facing south in the northbound lanes.

Jarvis was returning home from work. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. There was no indication that alcohol or illegal drug use was a factor in the collision.

The northbound lanes of the parkway at the crash scene were closed for about two hours as troopers conducted the crash investigation.  They were assisted by members of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and the Putnam Valley Fire Department.
