Enjoy the First Days of Summer with an Ice Cream Fundraiser, A Carnival and A “Trip” to Italy

School's almost out and summer has officially arrived. It's up to you on how you want to fill you and your children's days. Rest assured, the Grab and Go Kids Planner is here to help!

2011 Summer Reading Club
Where/When: Pearl River Public Library at 80 Franklin Ave. in Pearl River; from Monday, June 20 to Friday, July 29. Interested readers should go to the children's librarian's desk and ask for a drawstring backpack filled with reading club information.
Hours: Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.;
Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Join: Independent readers who have finished kindergarten through sixth grade are welcome to join the Pearl River Public Library's Summer Reading Club. Readers will read books at home and participate in contests and games while earning stickers and prizes.

2011 Battle of the Books 
Where/When: Pearl River Public Library at 80 Franklin Ave. in Pearl River; Wednesday, June 22 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Join:  If your child is between the ages of 12 and 18, then he or she can participate in the 2011 "Battle of the Books" competition. Pearl River
"Battle of the Books" team members will get together once a month to discuss the books from the "battle list," including: The Hobbit, Into Thin Air, The Wednesday Wars and Ghostopolis, to name a few. Teams from neighboring libraries will come together on Saturday, Sept. 10 and find out who knows the most trivia about the eight selected titles.

Outdoor Movie Screening of "Despicable Me"
Where/When: Excelsior Fire Engine Company, 1 Michael Kernan Drive in Pearl River, off Route 304 by blinking light; 
Saturday, June 25 at 8:30 p.m. Bring your own blankets and lawn chairs! Refreshments will be available.
Donation: $4 for adults; $2 for kids under 12; $10 for family of 4

Seventh Annual Congers Fire Department Carnival (Congers)
When/Where: Lake Road and North Harrison in Congers; Thursday, June 23 through Sunday, June 26. On Thursday and Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.; on Saturday and Sunday, from 4:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Ice Cream Fundraiser (Orangeburg)
Where/When: Little Scoops Ice Cream Shop, located at500 Route 303; Sunday, June 26 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Why Go: A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Mary Therese Rose Fund,
a foundation that provides financial assistance for services for special needs children at The Valley Hospital Kireker Center for Child Development in Ridgewood, NJ.

Toddler Story Hour (Piermont)
Where/When: Piermont Library, located at 25 Flywheel Park West, off Ash Street and Piermont Avenue; on Monday, June 27 from 11:00a.m. to noon.
Why Go: Hosted by Agnes Caniza, this fun-filled hour of crafts and books is geared to children ages six months to five years.

Where/When: The Pearl River Public Library, 80 Franklin Avenue;
Monday, June 27 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Why Go: Miss Annadora will teach kids entering first, second and third grades about the beauty of Italy. There will be Venetian masks, Pinocchio, puppets and pizza.

Pirates of the Hudson: The Siege of Sleepy Hollow
Where/When:
This raucous festival is taking place at Philipsburg Manor from Saturday, July 2 through Monday, July 4 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Event takes place rain or shine.
Why Go: Ahoy, maties! Grab your brood and bring 'em to Philipsburg Manor for the most fun this side of the Caribbean. Join us as boisterous pirates lay anchor in the Hudson and storm Sleepy Hollow. Musical pirates, gypsy sword dancers, and scallywags of all sorts will roam the grounds, ready to make you smile while secretly stealin’ yer gold. Kids can take part in the Pieces of Eight treasure hunt, wiggle their way into a pirate shipwreck, and learn to speak and act like a bloody pirate! Wander through Dr. Grymm's Museum of Oddities and get scarred for life (well, for a day at least) at Lady Molly Roger's Tattoo Shoppe. Send a maiden on a voyage...to the bottom of a dunk tank! Go on a multi-sensory voyage of your own, if you dare, to the very bottom of the sea: Davy Jones' Locker.

“Seussical the Musical!” at the Westchester Broadway Theatre (Elmsford)
Where/When: Westchester Broadway Theatre, 1 Broadway Plaza in Elmsford; Performances, featuring Dr. Seuss’ many colorful characters, are scheduled from June 16 to July 31.
