Fire Training Center Youth Programs Seeking Members

The Youth Academy and Explorers Post are both seeking members

The Rockland County Fire Training Center is seeking participants for two youth programs going on.

The Rockland County Youth Academy, for ages 12-14, is still in the process of starting up for the year, and the Rockland County Explorers Post, for ages 14-16, has already started up and meets throughout the year. There is no fee for either program.

The Youth Academy introduces kids to emergency services, including fire and emergency medical services, through a six-week program. The program is made up of classroom and hands-on training in firefighting, first aid and rescue operations. Members in the program will become certified in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Classes meet one night each week and on Saturdays at the training center in Pomona.

Peter Byrne, coordinator of fire services, safety and compliance, said anyone interested should call the training center at 845-364-8800, and they will be put on the list to be contacted once the dates have been set for 2013.

The Explorer’s Post is a step up, with gear and uniforms provided to members.  The group meets two Sundays a month from 6 to 9 p.m. at the training center. Members will receive classroom and hands-on training. The program runs throughout the year, and Byrne said the next two meetings are Jan. 27 and Feb. 10.

For additional information or to receive an application contact the Rockland County Fire Training Center at 845-364-8800.
