Heart Attack Survivor Reunites With His 'Guardian Angel' Paramedics

Just a week after life-saving emergency treatment, Nanuet man meets Rockland Paramedics crew that kept him alive on trip to Good Samaritan Hospital.

A week ago, was in the fight of his life.

Kiely suffered a heart attack while he was in New City and went into cardiac arrest as emergency medical personnel picked him up for the ambulance trip to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern.

His heart had stopped beating and had to be shocked as he was resuscitated in the back of a ambulance by Rockland Paramedic Services Lt. Bernadette Frae and Paramedic Sarah Gallagher.

On Tuesday, just one week later, Kiely, Frae and Gallagher met again under much different circumstances.

Kiely and paramedics Frae and Gallagher were all invited for breakfast with Ray Florida, executive director of Rockland Paramedic Services, and his fellow members of the Clarkstown Sunrise Rotary Club at the in Bardonia.

Florida said the experience Tuesday was heart-warming and an emotional reunion as Kiely initially saw the two paramedics who saved his life. Kiely described them as his guardian angel paramedics.

Kiely described himself as an avid walker and in good shape. He said even if you think you are in good shape you should see a doctor on a regular basis for check ups.

As he was being treated in the ambulance last week, preparations were being made by cardiac experts at Good Samaritan Hospital. When he arrived, doctors were waiting and ready to treat the blockage that caused the attack.

Kiely, a former Nanuet ambulance volunteer, on the day of his heart attack realized he was in trouble while he was in New City and stopped to get help at Clarkstown Town Hall. He ran into Clarkstown Police Chief Michael Sullivan, who just happened to be in the building and was able to call quickly for medical assistance.
