Well the Bad Economy is Obama's fault. That's probably why crime rates are increasing.
matt March 04, 2013 at 07:30 PM
also the comment 'being gangster' boarders on blatant racism.
BH March 04, 2013 at 07:31 PM
@Charles Do you know their life stories, or anything about these people? I'm going to go ahead and say no, which would mean you are unfairly judging people based on appearance and the time at which they decide to go to a 24 hour store.
NoName March 04, 2013 at 07:32 PM
Take it easy Matt. You may blow a gasket if this bothers you that much.
NoName March 04, 2013 at 07:35 PM
So the ganster thing wasnt started by young black men and pushed in all their Rap videos??. But, watch out. You better not say it, even if it is the truth. I saw it all begin in Harlem and the Bronx in the 80's and 90s and now white suburban kids all walk around like they are part of some inner city Crips or bloods gang. What a bunch of losers. I know whats coming next---Racism! Racism!!
Charles Orlik March 04, 2013 at 07:36 PM
Nope. It was just an observation on how much rap music with lyrics about being gangster are much admired and appreciated by young people today. Rather then singing about something positive and uplifting, it's almost always music about problems in the ghetto. Instead of running with that choir how about starting a business that changes lives (including the person that started it) or doing something contructive like charitible work. There are too many people sitting home collecting checks that could be doing something constructive - white or black, old or young - that are perfectly capable but choose not too and live off the government while we honest people bust our asses and give our taxes to the people who "live off the system."

Wow..I was being sarcastic.
Charles Orlik March 04, 2013 at 07:40 PM
Yes - looking like they are on hardcore drugs or incoherent, or being drunk in public - yes i can make an educated guess on observing that.
matt March 04, 2013 at 07:50 PM
no, I just feel like the word 'gangster' is a word people use when they don't want to use the word they are thinking.
RDR March 04, 2013 at 07:54 PM
I agree with you Matt
BH March 04, 2013 at 07:54 PM
Alllllll of the unfair judgment.

Folks, let's keep this civil and focused on the topic rather than each other. Thanks.

Pharmacies are magnets for late night degenerates from both within and outside the town they are located in. I'd place the blame on the suspect (guaranteed non pearl river resident). If I go somewhere and commit a violent crime, it is a reflection of me, not the town I commit it within. This is huge news because armed robberies virtually never happen in pearl river. Pearl river has issues that every town has, and less than most for that matter. A town doesn't have expensive real estate and award winning schools because its filled with druggies and armed robbers.

I'm glad no one was hurt or killed. Hopefully CVS has a therapist available for the staff after this trauma.
james smith March 05, 2013 at 12:19 AM
Wake up ladies and gentleman, the most important thing is that no one was hurt!!! Since the beginning of time there has been good and bad and even people in between. It doesn't matter if you are from Pearl River, Nanuet, Spring Valley or even Scarsdale. Were Madoff's crimes any less heinous? What about what the tabacco companies did to us and our families for generations? And on and on and on! Just think about those poor children and teachers that were shot in CT. It's not a perfect world (nor town) and it never will be and there is no magic wand to make it perfect. All we can do is our part to make it better for our families, friends, neighbors and fellow human beings.
K Mc March 05, 2013 at 02:15 AM
Wow. I've been in pearl river for 8 years and this is the first major crime I've heard of. There's no crime here outside the shoplifters and dumb asses doing drugs. But that's everywhere. This town is...well now was the safest place. Residents here all look out for each other. Its the riff raff from surrounding towns that come cause the issues. Damn shame we can't remain the quiet friendly community we've been.
K Mc March 05, 2013 at 02:18 AM
Later in the afternoon there was an SUV slammed into the wall at CVS. CVS was not having a good day today.
Joan K March 05, 2013 at 01:26 PM
Let's outlaw cigarettes because it seems like this was a nicotine fueled crime.
Harvey Cedars March 05, 2013 at 02:01 PM
Would it be legal for our esteemed elected officials to make an ordiance that no business can be retailing from 3am - 6am? Would it be so terrible if CVS, 7-11, and some of the bars were closed during that time? The elected offiials might lose a few campaign donations from some local businesess but I think the community would benefit.
Sydney Smith March 06, 2013 at 12:22 AM
Thank god the robber didn't shoot any one when he was told they couldn't open the safe. I hope CVS gives the night crew a week off with pay.
Zachary March 06, 2013 at 02:28 AM
Harvey, you must not work nights... some of us professionals work overnight hours, specifically police, ems, fire etc. How we supposed to get snacks?
Harvey Cedars March 06, 2013 at 03:09 AM
@Zach...I don't work nights You could be thrifty and pack a snack before leaving for work. If not for the safety of your neighbors would you mind going just beyond town borders when you must have snack between 3-6am? Any other issues with the idea of not allowing retailing from 3-6 am? Heck, while I am being crazy, I also suggest we not allow street parking during the same hours. That will indirectly cause problems to some of the illegal apartment rentals.
Paul March 06, 2013 at 06:32 AM
@ Harvey and all...being open late at night is not the problem. Closing business at these hours is irrational and unfair. People like myself who go to school during the day need jobs like these in order to have an income. Also, the store was robbed at 4:38am which is a time that many people I know of are waking up and going to work and of whom like these stores open as a convenience for picking up breakfast and such. Because others may have a perfect life and 9-5 job doesn't mean we all do. It is unfair to cater only to them. Also, as I recall there was a threat on a PR bank a few years ago, this is not the first incident of crime. Stop scapegoating youn teens and "undesirables" because Pearl River is still a great town. Maybe a little enlightenment as to what the world is like would do some good.
Harvey Cedars March 06, 2013 at 02:01 PM
@Paul...I sincerely applaud you for getting an education and working. I hope when my kids are older they have your work ethic. My main point is based on this recent news coupled with drug arrests and similar instances, I believe our town is changing. We can ignore or it or do something about it.
Frank Abignale Jr. March 06, 2013 at 05:11 PM
Please enlighten everybody what sort of crime is going on in Pearl River. Besides underage drinking and drug use, which is in EVERY town. When is the last time you have heard of an armed robbery in this town? The last i've heard similar to this is a robbery at 711, where there were no weapons involved. I lived in NYC for 10 years and then moved to Pearl River. This town is EXTREMELY safe compared to other places. Stop being ignorant and realize that these things happen...
JMom March 06, 2013 at 07:30 PM
If a guy wants to rob a place, he'll do it at 2am or 10pm or 3pm. Changing the store hours doesn't solve the problem. If anything, it possibly puts more people in danger since the store would likely be more crowded at another time of day.
KR March 07, 2013 at 04:57 PM
I realize people are upset but there is way too much "the sky is falling" talk about Pearl River in this thread. Stop dramatizing all this. It's sad it happened but it was most likely an outsider, as has happened in the past with muggings and kicks in. Too say that you have lived in this town for 8 years without hearing of a major crime is absurd or maybe you just recently started following the news. Pearl River is still a great town and one of the better ones in rockland county. Stop acting like we are plagued by criminals, teens gone wrong and other dramatized events. Seems like this topic is full of "in my day" seniors
Hawaii March 10, 2013 at 04:51 AM
If you really want to keep the quality of life good in PR then close the stores like this one at 11pm
Hawaii March 10, 2013 at 04:52 AM
Don't need people coming from miles away to shop at that hour and God knows what else thery're doing...
