Police: Three Pearl River Establishments Caught Selling Alcohol to Underage Customers

Orangetown Police announced Wednesday that bartenders at three establishments in Pearl River and one in Nyack were caught serving alcohol to people under 21 during an ABC Check May 30.

The businesses involved were the Horse and Hockey, Murty's Publick House and the Parkside Tavern in Pearl River and the Pour House in Nyack. The bartenders served summonses for Sale of Alcohol to a person under 21 were as follows:

  • Horse and Jockey -- Joseph McDonald, 38, of Congers
  • Murty's Publick House -- Lesley Ann Lennon, 45, of Pearl River
  • Parkside Tavern -- Brittany Martin, 26, of Pearl River
  • The Pour House -- Michael Cox, 21, of Bronx, NY
Cox is due in Nyack Justice Court June 18. McDonald, Lennon and Martin are due in Orangetown Justice Court June 12.

Parkside Tavern owner John Natirboff said he was surprised to find one of his bartenders on the list.

"All I can say is my family and I have been in business here, this is our 50th anniversary." Natirboff said. "This is the first time this has ever happened here. The bartender told me she was quite busy and it just happened.
"My place here has a reputation for not serving underage. Most of my customers are 25 and up. I don't attract a lot of kids."

Natirboff said he constantly stresses the importance of checking for proof of age to his bartenders. He said he has already met with all of his bartenders regarding the incident and he will be having them take a course offered by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on the matter. He said he has had them take the course before, but that it was time to do it again. He said that as of now, Martin is still employed by the Parkside Tavern.

"It better not happen again out of my place," Natirboff said.
Calls to Murty's Publick House, the Horse and Jockey and the Pour House had not been returned at the time of this report.

In 2011, Orangetown Police found four people under the legal age of 21 in possession of alcohol at the Horse and Jockey

The ABC check was conducted May 30. by the Orangetown Police Department with New York State Police, the New York State Liquor Authority and the RC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
