(UPDATE) 2 Women Killed in New City Fire

An elderly woman and her daughter were found dead at 36 Stratford Place in New City early Thursday morning.

UPDATE (9:30 a.m.) Clarkstown Police have identified the two women who died in Thursday morning's fatal fire as Barbara Calise, 79, and Yvonne Calise, 54. Their bodies were found inside the house.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire and say it does not appear to be suspicious.  Their preliminary investigation shows it may have started in the basement.

UPDATE (4 A.M.): A fast-moving fire in a New City home killed two women and destroyed the two-story house early this morning.

New City volunteer firefighters said that in the few minutes between the 911 call for help from inside the home and their arrival at the home at 36 Stratford Place the victims were trapped in a front room on the first floor of the house.

New City Fire Chief Kenny Flynn said he was among the first firefighters to arrive at the 12:17 a.m. fire and he could immediately see the rear of the home was fully engulfed by flames. Flynn said he and other firefighters could not get into the home through the rear and when they tried to get in through front door, the entire first floor of the home burst into flames.

Flynn said the cause of the fire is uncertain and part of the investigation into the fire will be an attempt to determine whether the home had working smoke detectors. Clarkstown police arson investigators and Clarkstown fire inspectors were going through the rubble of the home this morning, and members of the Rockland County Medical Examiner's Office arrived at about 3:30 a.m.

The fire brought out more than 100 volunteer firefighters from New City and six other nearby fire departments. One firefighter suffered what appeared to be a minor injury from debris getting into his eyes, Flynn said.

Flynn noted that when residents of the home call 911 they apparently thought there might be a fire in the laundry room. After firefighters used a fire department taker truck and hose lines from a nearby fire hydrant to battle the blaze and push back the flames they were able to enter the home and search for victims.

Firefighters discovered found the body of the two women in a front room on the south side of the house.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down in about 45 minutes, but firefighters were finding pockets of fire throughout the house for more than two hours. Neighboring homes on the street - just a few blocks north of Germonds Road and just west of Felix Festa Middle School - were not affected by the fire.

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Director Gordon Wren Jr. said family members of the victims have been notified about the deaths.

This was the second fatal fire in New City in less than a year, following the death of a woman in her Central Avenue home. The fire was also the second double-fatal incident in New City in less than two weeks, coming after the deaths of two Congers men in a crash on Strawtown Road.

In addition to members of the New City Fire Department and Clarkstown police, crews assisting in the emergency effort included the Nanuet, West Nyack, Congers, Hillcrest, Haverstraw and Theills fire departments, members of the New City and Nanuet volunteer ambulance squads and members of Rockland Paramedics.

3 a.m.

Gordon Wren, County Fire Coordinator, said that New City Fire Department and EMS received the call to the scene around 12:31 a.m.

“When they got on scene ... they found a building well (engulfed) with fire. The initial dispatcher indicated that there was a possibility that there would be victims inside the house.”

Clarkstown fire inspectors and arson detectives are working on the cause of the fire and whether or not there were smoke detectors, said Wren.

"Police are conducting their investigation, which will be ongoing for quite some time," said George Drescher, deputy fire inspector. "It was a heavy volume of fire.” He added that the fire departments did all they could, but that the fire had gotten so large by the time they arrived on scene, so much of the house is damaged.

“We got the fire under control in about 45 minutes,” said Drescher, adding that about 100 firefighters were involved.

The medical examiner needed to investigate the scene as well. It has not been determined where the fire started or the cause.

Thiells Fire Department was also assisting. New City EMS, Nanuet EMS and Rockland Paramedics arrived at the scene but were not needed.

1 a.m.

A fire in a New City home late Wednesday night left two women dead.

They were found at the home at 36 Stratford Place, according to Clarkstown Sgt. Ken Smith. "We had two fatalities, an elderly woman and her handicapped daughter."

Volunteers from the New City, Congers, Nanuet, Hillcrest and West Nyack Fire Departments put out the blaze. Rockland Paramedics and the New City Ambulance Corps were among those also on the scene.

The fire spread to most of the stucture before it was put out.

As of 1 a.m., the cause of the fire was unknown and under investigation. Smith said that the investigation would probably take the entire day on Thursday.

As firefighters and investigators were searching through the rubble from this morning's fire, fire officials made a plea for Rockland County residents to check to make sure the smoke detectors in their homes are in working order. If you have battery-powered detectors, make sure to change the battery at least once a year. And, if you don't have a smoke detector in your home, take the time to get one and install it. Here's more info on smoke detectors: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/catalog/servlet/ContentView?pn=KH_BG_EL_Smoke_and_CO_Alarms&storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053

How sad. My sympathy to the family and friends of this mother and daughter.

The information in this articile is so inconsistant, it is unbelievable! You say Chief Flynn arrived at the scene at 12:17 and in another paragraph you say the 911 call was received at 12:31! It's a terrible tragedy, but perhaps there is more to investigate!

Another reason why multiple dwelling homes should not have been approved in Clarkstown. In case you don't know, the Town has given approval to subdivide single dwelling homes to provide "housing" for volunteers. Those volunteers must be Clarkstown residents, which begs the question, if they are residents already, why do they need housing?
Multiple dwelling housing will lead to an increase in safety issues.

and this does not sound like the 2 women thought there was an emergency [fire] where they could NOT escape or does "they" refer to the firemen who responded. there should be no difference but just to clarify
"Flynn noted that when residents of the home call 911 they apparently thought there might be a fire in the laundry room" who is "they"

EDelargy..Two people are dead and you're complaining about times? Unbelieveable!!!
stephany February 14, 2013 at 05:30 pm
+don't forget to keep your dryer vent cleaned so the smoke alarm may not have to go off.
!!!!!! dryer vent fire ?
John February 14, 2013 at 05:38 pm
GWashington, no one said this house was "subdivided". It is a case where a parent and child still lived under the same roof.
My heartfelt condolences to the family of those involved
GWashington February 14, 2013 at 05:47 pm
I didn't say it was either.

I knew the victims, Barbara and Vonnie Calise, for over 50 years. They were wonderful people whose loss is very real to those of us who loved them. Please keep that in mind when commenting on this sad news. Respect the feelings of the surviving family and let them grieve in peace without politicizing the story just yet.
Hirsch Berkman February 14, 2013 at 07:31 pm
Sincere condolences to the family! It is times like these that we must work together to implement safety protocols and procedures designed to prepare for, and prevent such terrible tragedies from happening. Thank you to the volunteer Firefighters, First Responders, and the EMT's who responded. Our community is forever in debt to your selfless service helping others! RIP
Jim February 14, 2013 at 07:43 pm
Stephany do you even know the victims? What are you doing go worry about something else rather than worrying about the investigation two amazing people died. No one wants to hear you complain about dryer vents being clean. May the two victims rest in peace.
stephany February 14, 2013 at 07:56 pm
what s the difference if i knew them or not? and where did i "complain" about dryer vents anything or do you mean right after bill complained about smoke alarms. and i am still waiting for you to say how you know it was an accident which is right before you called people here idiots

Volunteers need housing because many fire departments have members between the age of 16 through mid 20's that live with their parent. When they want to move out and get their own place, they can't afford to live in Rockland County. The fire departments rely on these young adults to learn and run the fire department so when they grow up, they can teach the next generation.
Jpod February 14, 2013 at 09:21 pm
I agree Jim. May they rest in peace

jpod, I raised that question, because it sounds like something is wrong with the response times! I also acknowledged the tragedy, two women are dead!

stephany, stop trolling. RIP
stephany February 16, 2013 at 03:12 am
since when is this trolling==asking for clarification on who is "they" and defending myself from someone and his buddy who apparently do not know enough to not talk about what they cannot possibly know since the investigation as to cause is still going on as we speak. and i am not saying it was not an accident just that they do not know. and why the dryer vent--well if it was not electrical it is not out of the question it was a vent especially if it was plastic and not installed, cleaned properly and had been smouldering after a late load they may have left on before retiring to bed. IT WOULD NOT BE THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED +++++ the 911 call mentioned the laundry room. i will assume for the sake of argument "they" is the caller, but i am still not sure.
"Flynn noted that when residents of the home call 911 they apparently thought there might be a fire in the "LAUNDRY ROOM" sorry you think that is trolling ,just kidding not really sorry. I have some lingering questions about this, just debating if i want to take the hit. no sense in posting [right now] if all i'll get is more questions. should i choose to later i will refer to this sequence of letters wdhgttb$b-gttf&kp=wiatwote

An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands.
