Van Jumps Curb, Injures Five Kids In New Square (VIDEO)

Van driver lost control and hit five girls Monday afternoon injuring three criticially

The driver of a medical supply van lost control late Monday afternoon and hit five young girls when his vehicle went over a curb and onto the lawn of a multi-family house. Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence said three of the girls were critically injured and brought to Westchester Medical Center. Approximately ages seven to nine years old, some of the girls suffered head injuries, one had a broken femur and several were in and out of consciousness.

"Three were brought back to conciousness thanks to the New Square Ambulance Corps," said St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence said one of the girls was flown by helicoper to Westchester Medical Center.  Two of the girls were also taken to Westchester Medical by bus and two other girls were taken by bus to Nyack Hospital. They are reported in stable condition as of 5 p.m.

"We had a 1-vehicle accident where a delivery truck lost control and plowed into five children. Two were taken to Nyack Hospital and three in critical condition were taken to Westchester Hospital,” said St. Lawrence. “As of right now (5 p.m.) (all five girls) are in stable condition.”

The girls were believed to be on a driveway of a Bush Lane house when the accident occurred. The driver, who was still at the scence at 5 p.m. being interviewed by police, was not injured. The van knocked over a power box and Orange & Rockland has shut off electricity to the area.

"We’re looking in the area for any … cameras that may have been on so we can get further possible viewing of the accident itself," said St. Lawrence. "The vehicle … went over an electrical box. Orange and Rockland (Utilities) responded in a very timely way and cut power to the area. There was actually 7,000 volts that were cut. The vehicle was not electrified."

The area has been blocked off by Ramapo Police.  The New Square Ambulance Corps. responded to the accident.  The company name on the delivery van is Five Star Home Medical Supplies

St. Lawrence plans to hold a 7:30 p.m. meeting at Ramapo Town Hall to provide an update on the incident.

Considering the high incidents vehicle/pedestrian accidents, its quiet evident that a better safety and enforcement process is needed for the residents of this village.
