Fixing Flooding Across State Lines with New State Funding

Flooding has damaged communities along the Mahwah, Hackensack and Ramapo rivers in Rockland County and across the state line in New Jersey for years.

An attempt in 2013 to create a bi-state commission to address the perennial problem was vetoed by NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo for lack of funding.

Now funding for a bi-county group is in this year's New York state budget, passed by lawmakers last week.

Today Rockand legislators Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski (D-96), Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-97) and New Jersey lawmakers and residents met at the corner of Blue Hill Road North and Veterans Memorial Drive in Pearl River to announce the inclusion of the Rockland Bergen Flood Mitigation Task Force in the state budget.

"This legislation creates a historic partnership between the two counties that will address the rampant flooding that has devastated communities throughout the region for years," Zebrowski said in a press release.
