Is New York's New Train Platform Smoking Ban A Good Thing?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a ban of smoking on Metro North and Long Island Railroad Platforms into law last week.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a new law last week that bans smoking at outdoor ticketing, boarding and platform areas of MTA-operated trains.

The ban will take effect 90 days after its signing and violaters can be fined $100 for lighting up on Metro-North Railroad or Long Island Rail Road platforms.

"Cramped commuters deserve protection from the proven hazards of second-hand smoke," said Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern), who sponsored the legislation. "This ban is a tremendous victory for the health of New York's rail travelers, and I am thrilled the Governor has signed it into law."

Jaffee said that the legislation had the support of the MTA, which has been hearing complaints from riders having to deal with second-hand smoke.

This ban will impact the station in Pearl River, so that brings up the question for today -- Do you think this ban on smoking is a good thing?
