Jaffee Signs Letter Urging Reduced Gun Violence

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and 62 other New York State Legislators signed a letter state Senate and Assembly leadership calling for the passing of a plan to reduce gun violence.

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) joined with 62 other state legislators in signing a letter to Senate and Assembly leadership calling for action to reduce gun violence.

The letter is a repsonse to the shootings that left 26 people dead, 20 of them children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

The letter calls for the passage of a plan including the following measures, all endorsed by New Yorkers Against Gun Violence and the Violence Policy Center:

  • Require universal background checks on the sale of all guns
  • Strengthen assault weapons ban
  • Strengthen high capacity ammunition magazine ban
  • Require microstamping of guns to help law enforcement solve gun crimes
  • Require gun licenses to be renewed every five years
  • Improve gun dealer regulations
  • Regulation of ammunition sales
  • Limit personal gun purchases to one a month

"Now is the time to strengthen our resolve," Jaffee said. "We in government must join together to enact stronger, sensible gun laws that will protect our communities and our children from these horrific acts of violence. There is nothing more important. We owe it to our precious children, to their families, to their teachers, to ourselves as a nation and a civilized society."

Jafeee is a member of the New York chapter of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns (SLAIG).

A copy of the letter is attached to this report.

MessHall, I'm on your side, it was a quick search and I went with the first thing I saw. I did not feel like going through my library of books, from the likes of Joyce Lee Malcolm, John R Lott, JR, Clarence Cramer, and others, on the subject. Gun Control doesn't work.
On the same day as the Newtown incident, there was a deranged individual in China, that attacked an elementary school and cut up 23 children, some children had fingers and ears cut off. There have also been incidents of people attacking schools with hammers and axes over there. The mentally ill don't need guns to kill, they just need their sick twisted minds. China has had 9 attacks on schools since March of 2010, with 16 children killed and over 100 children wounded.

Here is a link to a recent NY Times article examining the poisonous influence of the NRA on legitimate legislative efforts to control gun violence.

How fast can you re-load a crossbow? Please stop the irrelevant comparisons to the sort of violence we have been ignoring here for so long. A congress-woman was shot in the head for chris'sake and Congress did nothing. They are all too afraid of the NRA. I suspect Ms Jaffee's letter will end up in the same sort of, shal I say "dead letter file".
Clemona December 29, 2012 at 03:00 pm
And you Mr. Guttman ignore the clear, intent of the framers.
They recognized the need of a "well regulated militia" or what we now call "The Armed Forces of the USA". But having just defeated a "well regulated militia" ei the British Navy. They realized that an armed citizenry is the only defense against a Tyranical Government. Now spin all you want semantically about what "the right of the citizens to bare arms shall NOT BE INFRINGED".
Clemona December 29, 2012 at 03:08 pm
Hey JC.
Still waiting for those links to debunk Kates/Mauser.

Congress tried to do something about the Gabby Giffords Shooting, back in 2007, with the NICS Improvement Act of 2007, Public Law 110-180, but the threat and fear of lawsuits for HIPAA Violations have prevented the States from complying with it. So stop blaming the NRA, because they were instrumental in making sure it got passed, in the wake of the Virginia Tech Shooting.

Above is an excerpt from the article I referred to, The entire article exeeded the 1500 char limit here.
I doubt you will actually read any of them but here are the references. Kates Mauser apparently just make shit up to fit their ideology. Absent peer review their propaganda plays precisely to people like yourself. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1485564/pdf/cmaj00266-0071.pdf http://journals.lww.com/jtrauma/Abstract/2000/12000/Firearm_Availability_and_Homicide_Rates_across_26.1.aspx http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/faculty/dranove/htm/dranove/coursepages/Mgmt%20469/guns.pdf http://home.uchicago.edu/~ludwigj/papers/JPubE_guns_2006FINAL.pdf

Page 1 of 2 Part Post -
We can exchange Links all day long –But Here’s the bottom line – We lived in Granada Hills Ca , only a couple miles from the epicenter of the Northridge Quake. I was awake when it hit ..we lived through what many of you only watched parts of on TV…they didn’t really show you everything that was going on. But for the first 2 or 3 days we got to see “Humanity” at its best and (unfortunately) worst …people’s Homes being looted WHILE they were home, waiting in line for Water, Gang members looting, no Police- no EMS- no Power, neighbors coming by to borrow ammunition, Military on patrol. The first day …When the Gang members started looting, a Pickup Truck with 6 of them came through our area …a bunch of our neighbors got together and we tried calling LAPD …most Phones were out BUT , with my Cell I got through to Devonshire Division…they couldn’t help but told me to call Foothill Division (of Rodney King fame) The Officer told me that they were overwhelmed and we were on our own …then he told me to listen very carefully. He asked if I had the ability to defend myself (I told him yes) , he then said , Try to get a License Plate and stay out of their way , but if you have no choice , do whatever you have to and defend yourself and your Family and then call them when it’s over ---he then asked if I understood what he was saying. I understood perfectly.

PART 2 --
The best was when several of my Liberal and previously rabid anti Gun neighbors started coming to me asking if they could borrow a shotgun or something to defend themselves with. I reminded one how he told me Guns were a Plague on Society ,should be illegal to own and how he did not “approve” of my owning and collecting them. Funny how Reality has a way of forcing even the most die-hard anti gun voters to change their opinions ..and learn how to load & change magazines. Listen..don’t take this the wrong way but , I don’t know you or your background …But you can be sure of mine, and it’s spotless. I have a NYS issued Concealed Carry Permit (and I do everyday) ..my permit is not for hunting and target. I’d be willing to bet that you have no idea how involved it is to get a Carry Permit here in NY –for YEARS I also had a FULL CARRY Permit in Massachusetts ..I was also a Federally Licensed Gun Dealer. NY & Mass don’t just hand out these permits ….the background checks are comprehensive and if there’s ANYTHING , any issue at all ..the License is denied. There’s a huge responsibility that comes with the decision to Carry . IMO..the anti gun people posting & complaining have the right to keep Guns out of their lives..it’s their choice – BUT THEY DO NOT have the right to prevent us from owning or legally carrying them, that’s our choice.

article written by one who changed his opinion after being in the LA Riots — http://www.seraphicpress.com/jew-without-a-gun/
Marc D December 29, 2012 at 04:24 pm
MessHall, I had an unrestricted NYS License before I became a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, I believe in the individual's Right to Keep and Bear Arms, for the very reason you stated above. Remember the LA Riots, the Asian Community kept the rioters at bay with their personal firearms, because the police couldn't help them.
MessHall December 29, 2012 at 04:47 pm
@ Marc D -- Oh yes, the Riots were another part of our LA “experience” ….I went to the Pony Express Gun Store in Reseda to buy some 12g and stood in a long line with 2 uniformed CHP behind me. I’d say that 50% of the people In Line were 1st time Gun Buyers who had no clue. They’d get their turn and ask what “Gun” would be the safest to own for protecting their Home and Family. The Clerks were very polite and tried educating them the best they could but , you can imagine what we were all thinking. (You should have seen all the Hollywood Gucci types walking out with 870's and #4 Buck)
We were more worried about these newbie’s ending up with a loaded Firearm without any training or Range time. But again …..and I’ve seen it first hand , no matter what they say or post …the more rabid/vocal anti Gun activists are ALWAYS the first ones in line trying to buy a Shotgun when “reality” hits the fan and they finally understand.

Marc, you prove our point. The guy used a knife on the 23, not a gun. No deaths. You are deluded if you think that hammers, axes, etc. are as lethal as guns.
John Taggart December 29, 2012 at 06:40 pm
Excellent comments MessHall, I needed and used a gun to defend against gang members in my house some time ago. The people here wont get it untill there on the other end.... Then Nyack Resident will be first in line.
The people shooting up schools are mentally ill and on drugs...THATS THE PROBLEM... put their drug pushing psyc doctors on trial..and reevaluate how we deal with mental illness in the US

Driving is a privilege, not a right
Sen Diane Feistein is suggesting putting all semi-automatic firearms into the National Firearms Act of 1934 Category, and in doing so, one must pay a $200 tax stamp to register their gun into it, then you would need to have a letter from your local Chief Law Enforcement Officer, that your firearm is legal to possess in your locality, or surrender the firearm. NY State is not a State that recognizes ownership of NFA Firearms, therefore all semi-automatic firearms (rifles, shotguns, and pistols) would be illegal in NY State.
MessHall December 29, 2012 at 07:45 pm
Nyack ...if you're going to debate this, do us all a favor and read/learn , then comment so you don't look like a fool. Do you even know what an NFA Weapon is ? Find the List and FIND me a Semi-Automatic Firearm that's on that list because it is Semi-Auto.
As far as the Registration -- NYC 1967 –Gun owners were told that the new Laws would not affect them , it was just for registration. Years later they took that list and started Banning & Confiscating them. Gun owners were lied to –they were forced to either turn them in to the NYPD or sell them. Here are the facts - http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/fact-sheets/2000/firearms-registration-new-york-city%60s.aspx?s=New+York+1967&st=&ps They did it again gain in California 1989 – Article - “ First Registration, Then Confiscation” By Tanya Metaksa FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, July 12, 2001 http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=23707 do your Homework

It came out that in Chicago there were 500 homicides in 2012. They have the toughest gun control laws in the country. The media does not say boo about it. The politicians never mention it. Why? They don't care. They are prejudice. This shooting in Newton both are all over it. Why? It pushes their anti-gun legislation. Once they get these new gun laws passed the way they look at it is 1 step at a time. Their ultimate goal is total ban on all guns. They can't get that now so they will go after "assault weapons". Next it will be some other type of gun and so on and so on.
Chris December 29, 2012 at 10:39 pm
How do you intend to coerce the teachers into packing lethal force? And if any may be coerced, you will give them a substantial risk-pay increment, won't you?
In which grade shall we teach our children how to carry a firearm? If, as you suggest, we reign in "deranged mentally ill person[s]" (I don't disagree with this suggestion), will THAT be the WHOLE remedy for decreasing the number of murders daily across our nation?
Chris December 29, 2012 at 10:51 pm
Into which high school did students bring firearms "all the time" as you say, until the mid '70s? Did they bring rifles AND handguns? Did they carry ammunition for these firearms with the knowledge of the school administration? At a public school in upstate NY I personally observed my classmate get expelled from school for bringing a handgun into school in the mid-'60s. He showed the gun to me earlier that day, and fired it into the air as we walked to school. I haven't told anyone about this until this writing.
Marc D December 30, 2012 at 12:59 am
And why do you say owning a semi-automatic weapon is a privilege, not a right? If you come up with some liberal answer like, the Second Amendment only protects the Right to own a flintlock, then maybe we need to take down this website, since the First Amendment only protect the Right to use a quill and ink with paper.

MessHall
Diane Feinstein is looking to get a new "assault weapons" ban put in place that will require all semi-autos to be reclassified under the NFA. She's a sick and twisted individual.
Marc D December 30, 2012 at 01:53 am
When I shot competitively, I use to shoot 1000 rounds a week, 400 in competition and 600 throughout the week, keeping in practice. I just don't have the time now, nor can I afford it at the current ammunition prices, so I only get to practice, when my job allows it, and a couple hundred rounds a week. Learn what you're speaking about Nyack, before you comment. But that's ok, tomorrow when I come home from working my shift, your comments will probably disappear again.
MessHall December 30, 2012 at 02:28 am
Nyack ...still waiting to hear you explain what the NFA is(in your mind anyway) and, let me know where you came up with that Quote ...I'd like to see the Forum that came from.
Quote "owning a semi-automatic weapon is also a privilege " This must be a Nyack Resident original thought because, I've never seen it on any ATF memos or State Laws .....----------------------------------------------------------------- Nyack Resident 2:34 pm on Saturday, December 29, 2012 owning a semi-automatic weapon is also a privilege, not a right. "NY State is not a State that recognizes ownership of NFA Firearms, therefore all semi-automatic firearms (rifles, shotguns, and pistols) would be illegal in NY State."

Nyack Why don't we look at where we got are gun controls law ideas from good old germany Senator Dodd requested a copy of the nazi gun laws from I believe nuremburg trials. The german government said their gun laws were for their own safety and stop crime, right total BS They used those same laws to find out who owned firearms and which ones they had and where to find them at. First they took their arms away then took their remaining rights away sent them to camps and murdered them. Please remember one clear undeniable fact everything hilter did that POS was 100 percent LAWFUL because of nazi laws enacted!!!

What SDFreeman says is true ..Sen Dodd worked on the Trials and had a copy of the Nazi Firearm Laws translated for his use on his 1968 Gun Control Act --- how we could base anything in America on a Nazi Law is beyond me but , it's true.
