Senator Carlucci speaks to an Army National Guard unit preparing for tour in Afghanistan

The US Army National Guard Company B, 101st Signal Battalion gathered at the New York State Armory in Orangeburg Sunday to hear from Senator David Carlucci, who pledged them his support both on the battlefield and when they return from deployment.

Sen. Carlucci told the unit, which is set to head to Afghanistan in August, about the high rate of unemployment among military veterans after they leave the armed services and that he is working to change that.

Anngela Vasser-Cooper, president and CEO of the Women's Veteran's Association of the Hudson Valley, also addressed the troops. Members of the Rockland County American Legion were also at the event to speak with troops.

What an inappropriate place to discuss one of your campaign issues. Out of touch doesn't begin to describe you. BOOB works for now.

As I was driving into work this morning, the news mentioned that 6 American servicemen were killed in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan. It was so nonchalant. I wish these brave men and women best of luck where they are going in serving our country. Some of us will never forget that where you are going is dangerous. Be safe and we THANK YOU!

Our Troops killed in action is only an issue with the MSM when a Republican is in the White House. God speed to all our troops on returning home safely.

I'm with you, GWashington. The slick, perfectly dressed and coiffed politician addressing the troops--how about a mention of how you'd like to stop sending these brave men and women into harm's way for no reason whatsoever? What the heck are we doing in Afghanistan--that hasn't already been attempted--and failed--by others? and why are we sending the freaking National Guard?? Are they honestly prepared as well as career soldiers? Are we sending them into something that they may not have the abilitiy to survive?
George Bush sent us through the looking glass and we may never return to reality. Dwight Eisenhower put it perfectly: "Beware the military-industrial complex." With all due respect to the men and women who serve to protect us, let's stop sending them places we simply don't belong.

Yup. What a clown. These warriors are off to defend our liberties ... and this political moron uses the moment to notch some political points. Not sure that's what'a on the minds of young Americans about to do battle with terror-happy medievalists who have zero regard for human life.

I agree wholeheartedly. It is time for us to stop policing the world and begin nation building right here ay home. I am happy that President Obama has started reducing our military footprint around the globe. I am also happy that he's in favor of national service for our young people, an idea that's long overdue. I think Bush junior was one of the worst Presidents we've ever had.

With all due respect, our National Guard is well prepared for their Mission. This is not their first deployment. With respect to Afghanistan, an A-bomb from 30k feet would serve this endeavor best.

Maggie24;
For the LAST 22 years (since Operation Desert Shield/Storm) the National Guard and Reserve components have been “operational” not forces in reserve. During a reservist or guardsman 8 year commitment- multiple active duty deployments are the norm. They are well prepared and a full partner of our Armed Forces. As a retired Master Sergeant- jobs opportunities upon return from deployment are near the top of every deploying soldier-airmen-sailor-Marine concern. So it would be appropriate for the Senator to speak to that topic. You are more than welcome to your other opinions.

Jack Duncan, my apologies if I wasn't clear on my respect for the Guard or their abilities, or their historic mission. I'm just tired of being involved in police actions around the world, that do little but prop up a defense industry and kill loyal Americans, drawn to an ideal. We've spent far too much money supporting Big Oil, dollars that could go to alternative fuel research. This craziness will not stop until we stop our dependence on oil.
Fat chance on that.

How about we just HONOR their service and say a Prayer for them and their beloved families.
Cut the manure & politics; just say THANK YOU.

Although I do not agree with the War in the Middle East, I sincerly hope that all of or young men and women come home to their familys safely and in one peice.

An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands.
