Maturo Will Not Run for Re-Election to Orangetown Town Board

Orangetown Councilman Michael Maturo announced that he will not run for re-election to the town board later this year.

Orangetown Councilman Michael Maturo spoke as recently as January of focusing more time on politics, but he will be putting that on hold to focus on his primary career in computer network engineering.

Maturo, 26, announced that he will not run for re-election to the Orangetown Town Board this year. Maturo, a Democrat who lives in Tappan, was elected to the board in November of 2007 and his current term will end in December.

"I love politics," Maturo said. "I love serving the public. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. When looking at long-term picture, I've got to do what’s right by my career first. This is a part-time job, but if you do it right, it’s not part time."

Maturo is currently working as a consultant, but he said that he is looking into jobs that will take up more of his time. He spoke in January about devoting more time to politics, but said that was more of a long-term goal.

"This was not an easy decision," Maturo said. "Until I find a job that is more flexible, it does not make sense for me or taxpayers for me to run for re-election. I’m not out of it for good. Who knows when I’ll come back."

Maturo said in a release that it is time for him to focus fully on his interest in technology.

“I’ve been fortunate to have strong community support -- from local organizations and many individual citizens who also care about Orangetown -- to be able to point to success in our golf enterprise, our environment, and our youth initiatives,” Maturo said. “It’s been an incredible experience serving the public in every way I could.  I also know that Orangetown is a community of exceptional people and there will be others who passionately serve in elected office.”
