Orangetown Board Approves Piermont Pump Upgrade, CDBG Submission (VIDEO)

The Orangetown Town Board also approved a new vendor for Veterans Memorial Park in Orangeburg.

The Orangetown Town Board approved the purchase of new pumps and other equipment needed to upgrade the Piermont pump station at Tuesday's meeting.

The entire purchase will cost $104,178, but there will be no labor costs because Orangetown Department of Environmental Management & Engineering personnel will handle the installation. DEME Director John Moran recommended the project and estimated savings of $75,000 to $100,000 by avoiding hiring contractors for the work.

Moran said the pumps are necessary because there have been no upgrades since the station was constructed in 1964.

"It has only two pumps and was designed for three," Moran said. "Over the last year or so, there have been 67 failures at that location.

"We would like to purchase the pumps, fittings and valves directly ourselves. We can save the markup from a contractor. We would like to do the work in-house with our own staff. They will have first-hand knowledge of any situation that comes up. It can be a tremendous savings to the town."

The board also approved the one project recommended by the town's Community Development Block Grant Committee, sidewalk renovations in Blauvelt and Orangeburg. Normally, the committee offers more than one recommendation and the town board ranks them in order of priority, but this time there is only one project for the Rockland County Entitlement Funds Application.

"The object of the project is to rehabilitate the safety sidewalk routes in the hamlets of Blauvelt and Orangeburg," said Sister Peggy Scarano of the CDBG Committee. The applications are due next week.

"Specifically, curb cuts at 30 locations along the safety sidewalk routes in Blauvelt and Orangeburg will enable the aforementioned elderly and disabled to safely cross streets and access shopping and public facilities."

The request is for $75,000 of the estimated $80,000 needed for the project, with the rest to come from town funds. The project was recommended by the Orangetown Highway Department.

The board also held a hearing to discuss the revised permit request by FB Orangetown, LLC for the Orangeburg Commons project on Route 303. That hearing was extended to the town board's next regular meeting Feb. 16 for further discussion.
