Orangetown Councilman Denis Troy expressed his admiration for Mel Liebmann's contribution to Pearl River during Tuesday's board meeting.
"Mel's Army-Navy in Pearl River has been there for 57 years," Troy said. "Mel Liebmann has an amazing work ethic. He has an amazing sense of community. He has been tremendous in terms of helping youth though the years. Any charity, anything that has come up, the guy is amzing."
The Orangetown Town Board passed a resolution declaring Saturday, Sept. 15 to be Mel Liebmann day. . Liebmann will be honored during an open house there from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
"The good news is (for) an institution like Mel's Army-Navy, he's selling it to somebody who worked there as a young man who wants to continue the legacy Mel left behind," Troy said. "So instead of like when we had Woolworth's and some of these other stores that were key stores in down town hamlets, Mel's Army-Navy will continue in Pearl River."
