Orangetown Board to Vote on Desal Issues Conference Tonight

After weeks of debate, the Orangetown Council will vote tonight on a resolution requesting an issues conference to be held to look into the issues relating to United Water's proposed Haverstraw Water Supply desalination plant during the town board meeting 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at town hall.

Two weeks ago during public comments at an Orangetown Council meeting, a group of residents criticized United Water's plan and called for Orangetown to support the issues conference. Stony Point and Rockland County villages including Piermont have already passed similar resolutions.

During last week's workshop, United Water's Michael Pointing was one of the speakers invited to present that side of the argument to the town board. Though no vote was held, the members of the Orangetown town board all spoke on the subject. Supervisor Andy Stewart and Councilmen Tom Diviny and Tom Morr said they would vote for the resolution. Councilmen Denis Troy and Paul Valentine said they were opposed to calling for the issues conference.

The resolution and the full agenda for tonight's meeting can be found here
