Orangetown Police Earn State Accreditation

The Orangetown Police Department had the chance to show its New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation certificate to the town board at last week's police commission.

The department received the official notice and certificate in March and brought them before the board at the monthly police commission last week.

The department is evaluated based on 133 standards broken into agency organization, training standards and operational issues to receive the accreditation. The program offers a confirmation that the department's procedures are in order.

Orangetown Police Chief Kevin Nulty recognized the work done by Lt. Donald Butterworth, Det. Frank Buhler and Captain Robert Zimmerman during the process. Butterworth and Zimmerman were present Thursday.

"The way we handle evidence could be a model for the whole state," Nulty said. "It is to their credit that they kept this thing going. Thank you Don and Bob. Frank knows I'm thankful to him, too."

Nulty also highlighted some other awards earned by members of his department recently:

  • Det. Buhler and Det. Joseph Sullivan were presented with William Conklin Memorial Awards as part of Haverstraw Elks Law Enforcement Recognition Night March 15.
  • Orangetown Police Officers Joseph Grunski, Brian Domotrovits and David Brockway were recognized at the American Legion Law Enforcement Appreciation Awards March 22.
  • Orangetown Police Officer Kirk Vega was recognized by Rockland County STOP-DWI April 16. Vega made 14 arrests for DWI in 2011.

Nulty also presented a letter from Rockland County St. Patrick's Day Parade C-Chairs Mary O'Sullivan and William Lee thanking the Orangetown Police Department for its work with the parade.
